Hi all, I need some advice on a budget build. These two options cost almost identical. Benchmark seems to be very similar, can't decide on one. What would you guys pick? Thanks

some modern games require the 4 cores of the athlon just to run, so  the athlon is far better. And anyways when you upgrade both platform will new a new mobo

The G3258 has better single core performance but the Athlon x4 845 has two more cores so it's better with multithreaded applications.

As previously mentioned as well some games will require 4 cores to even launch and more will most likely require that in the future as well.

What's your total budget and country?

You'll find that the users on this forum can find some options that you haven't considered.

Given the two cpus the Athlon is more powerful and better for gaming. However it's a dead end. With the Pentium you can upgrade to an i5.

I'd recommend you try to stretch your budget for at least an i3 however.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

Thank you all for your feedback. I already bought the other parts, missing motherboard and cpu now, budget would be around $150. I'm from Canada.

If you go for the pentium, they are only competitive to the athlon when at 4.5GHz or higher, so a better cooler like a 212 evo would also be required, if you don't want to deal with overclocking get the athlon.
