Hello,

I found a copy of windows server 2012 somewhere in my house from a long time ago and thought that it would be good to use. I am looking to build a really cheap server at about £250, I would be fine to use older components or used components if that would be the best. I will use the server for simply sharing files with the many computers in my house (about 5). I was thinking of using a FM2+ CPU as I have an MSI A55M-E33 motherboard lying around. I also need the case to be pretty small and I was looking at the Fractal Design Core 1100. For the graphics card, I think pretty much anything will do, I have a Radeon 5450 and a GeForce GT 710 I think somewhere. For the storage I will need about 3TB of storage although anything above 2TB will do. What are your ideas?

Thanks

r the graphics card,

Use the igpu on the apu

Id get a quad core apu, like a a8

Id get 16gb of ram(its cheap)

Id get a cheap boot drive(anything works, you can find tons of cheap 500gb hdds around.

Id get a few 2tb drives(they don't really matter, you can get really cheap ones if you want), then use the storage pool to make then into one redundant volume.

Right okay, so maybe an A8 7650K?

That looks good. Windows server can be a pain with drivers some times and the one's from the mobo don't work and you have to use the ones from who ever makes the part(for example realtek).

Okay, what's the cheapest HDD you can find?

I think you're paying too much for that CPU.  That's 74.99 GPD for the CPU,  Meanwhile on eBay you could get a used AMD Athlon X4 750K on eBay for $37 GBP with free shipping. ( http://www.ebay.ca/itm/AMD-Athlon-X4-750K-AD750KWOA44HJ-3-4-GHz-FM2-100w-Processor-/401186383956?hash=item5d68926854:g:9pUAAOSw-kdX1Lcc ) That's a savings of 41 GBP.  Now, that's an FM2 Athlon, it does NOT have onboard graphics, you'd have to use that Radeon HD 5450 you already own.  You'll occupy a PCIE slot but you'll save a huge amount of money for a CPU of the same performance level but without the graphics built in.

Yup.  Keep in mind that you WILL wait a while for shipping.  Be sure to test the CPU once it arrives.  But you are paying via PayPal who will HEAVILY side with consumers if someone tries to screw them.  If they send you garbage, PayPal will issue you a refund.

Right, okay... Might get that. My Dad needs to upgrade his PC soon, do you think that it would be viable to use his AMD FX 8350 aswell as MSI 970 motherboard, with him using some intel CPU?

You can use a 8350, but it will pull more power and there is no reason to if you don't need cpu power.

For a desktop cpu, a 8350 is fine for most tasks. What is he using his pc for?

It would work, sure.  Frankly you just want to run some shares off a Windows machine.  A toaster could do the job.  In most cases, a quad core is overkill even.  It would be hard to UNDER build a server like this.  An Atom or Celeron could do the job.

He uses his PC for light gaming, I was thinking I could use the cpu and mobo off of that in the server then give him an msi a55m-p33 and an i3 4170?

Don't ever buy a CX430 PSU. They're shit. Get a CX450M instead.

Fair enough. We're talking consumer grade hardware here, so it's up to him to choose something that won't blow up the second it sees power :P

The CX600 can take much more than the 430. Lots of 430s have trouble handling continuous loads over 300W. ;)
