But that would make a 1070 version impossible as the 1060 version already overheats. The 1060 chassis was built for a 970M (the one I have)

yeah but why not just put the gtx 1060 in the same chassis as the gtx 1070 version.

Cause thin and light sells :) - dumb people buy overheating machines based on specs - hence why the Acer V Nitro sell so well.

because the chassy of the 1070 model is more expensive to make, so they can save some money buy just using the old chassy for the 1060

i honestly don't think its all that more expensive to make. i think they just want to use the same production lines already in place. i guess that would be expensive to change the production line.

you think short run, Asus doesn't. This laptop will be here for a long time and they would be able to use the design for future laptops and furter more the cost of the metal becomes a lot when you add it up. Let say a production of X product goes up with 30$ per product, let us then say that they need to make 100k of that product, then it cost 3 million more to make it.

And how would you cool and power it? There's a lot more engineering tolerances to consider than having enough room.

the same way you did the gtx 1070 version. if it can cool the gtx 1070 it can cool the gtx 1060. they already spent the money designing a cooler for gtx 1070 version might as well use it. if you were to take the gtx 1070 version and just changed the gpu it would be around 200 dollars cheaper to make than the gtx 1070 version which is 1700 so that would mean they could sell it at 1500 which is 100 dollars more than their current version.

lol materials don't cost that much manufacturing does. if they can make and sell the gtx 1070 version for $1,700 they can make and sell the same laptop with just a different gpu for 1,500 easy.

that was a exsample. Asus can use that manufacturing for future laptops, not just this gen laptops, so it makes a lot of sense to do this and they most likely also have a lot of the shells and cooling for the 970m model laying around, so they use that and they already have the manufacturing for that and it is very expensive to close a manufacturing down.

yeah id guess they don't want to replace the tooling they invested in.

I don't understand what you're saying. You want a thick RoG laptop with a 1060 instead of a 1070? It's not going to work in an ultrabook.

the gtx 1070 version isn't that thick. i'd rather have a 1 cm thicker laptop than one that doesn't cool properly.

Noooo, DO NOT BUY THOSE. Pascal GL502 and MSI laptops have major heat issues - the MSI ones run at 55dB (extremely loud) and have the heatpipes over the chipset - that is likely to kill it
GL502 1060 simply throttles.

Are you serious?  I was getting so excited for these machines and it's turning out to be some joke.

Surprise surprise. And it's actually at 92C throttled to 2.8ghz on the 1070 GL502 version. No idea what people are saying about it running at 80ishC and not throttling.
