Putting Old CPU, GPU, and RAM Into New Parts. Advice? :D

Hello. I'm considering putting some of my old peripherals into a new case, buying a new power supply, hard drive, and motherboard also. I'm doing this mainly because my small pre-built Dell desktop machine is terrible in airflow, has little to no BIOS options, and the same power supply, motherboard, and hard drive has been running for at least 5 hours average every day for 8 years.

Maybe it would last a few more years, but my CPU (AMD Phenom II X4 965 (3.4Ghz)) is already used and I would like to preserve it the best I can. It runs at around 38-40 idle, and up to 50 degrees C at even 33-50% load. I don't know if this is due to it being used, putting the thermal paste on wrong (it ran 6 degrees cooler across the board, but only for three weeks after I installed it, then got hotter,) or if it's due to airflow. I'm using an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 and the pre-applied thermal paste that was already on there. Here's a picture of the case, although my GPU is a 550 Ti instead. http://hothardware.com/articleimages/Item1527/XPS_7100_Main.jpg

My current build is also really loud. I would like something at least a little quieter, so pretty much anything will do.

A good motherboard with options to overclock and change voltages is preferred. I've heard of people under-voltaging this specific CPU to keep it cooler at stock speeds, and still being stable. I don't know if I'd do that, though.

My budget is around $400.

Here's what I have so far.

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147107

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131851

HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAEE4TM3533

Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151088

If all of these parts are compatible, I would do this. Any advice/recommendations are very much appreciated. :) I know this won't improve my performance any, but I would rather do this now than have to buy these parts when it finally dies. Thank you so much in advance to any generous soul who decides to help. :)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Athlon x4's run on FM2 not am3 so you need a different motherboard.

Yeah you can, you just have to find an FM2 Motherboard, I don't have a lot of experience with these kind of motherboards, but something like this:

:D If that's possible, I would like to do that. Intel has really great processors (especially in single core performance). I could probably go up to $450 if needed. The only thing is, though, is that my GPU isn't very powerful anyways, so the Intel CPU would certainly outshine it in games, maybe bottleneck it?

The GPU can't reduce the CPUs performance, the GPU just gets to be max performance all the time.

The CPU I have is compatible with the motherboard I'm considering using... I already upgraded to the Phenom II processor.

Just a side note here (little off topic but funny) I too went from an old phenom to an fx series chip. Later I found out that the upgrade from the phenom to the fx was a 14% upgrade on userbenchmarks lol. Anyways ShadowTechXTS build is very solid I would go with that.

You could update your graphics card later, you will probably get similar performance in games with a slightly bump, yes the CPU will be bottlenecked by the GPU and as shadow said the GPU will just ruin at max ask the time.  You current CPU is a Phenom ii which is a socket am3 part Eminentsun is mistaken.

Ah, okay. I know it can happen the other way around. :D I looked at your part list and made a few modifications (actually, I changed everything to see how it'd look lol). Maybe I'll tweak it later and try to get it down below $500. We'll have to see if I can afford it. :) Thank you very much for the list. I'll definitely try to sell my old CPUs somewhere for a few bucks. The other parts aren't worth anything.

I might still go with the AMD chip, mostly because I'm so used to having crap performance anyways and can save a lot of money that way. xD After messing around with this, I'd probably go with yours or the AMD instead of my list. It's getting up there in price.

You don't need 650w for this build, even a 450w would be fine.

Also I would change the case, Always a better idea to increase the price for hardware rather than aesthetics. Source 210 is a good bang for the buck and will give you a bit more cash to play with.

Seasonic makes some of the best PSUs out there, who tells you it's terrible?

If I go with Intel, I'll do this. I looked up a performance comparison between the two chips, and the one your recommended turned out to be the better one overall. xD Thank you and everyone else who helped out. :)

I just wanted to say thanks again for all your help. I ended up going with this http://pcpartpicker.com/list/NPFh7h and hope to get a new GPU soon. :) I have a GPU I can use, but it's not worth the noise it makes (the fan is tiny and loud).

It's so cool and quiet. Much, much better than I imagined it would be. This CPU is so powerful that I feel like it could do anything! My old Phenom II X4 965 just doesn't compare. I had a friend who bought the same case and heatsink as I did, too lol. He spent about $1000 more on drives, CPU, and GPU than me. :3

Anyways, thanks again. :)
