I went AMD initially because I was a fool (not even budget related), dropping in excess of £300 on a phenom II x6 1100t Black Edition when far better intel options existed.

I then consolidated my idiocy by purchasing an overpriced RoG motherboard, as in my mind more money meant better.

Having spent a few years gaming on AMD it's time for an upgrade, and having considered the fx8350 I've decided I'd rather switch to intel.

Due to my recent infatuation with the 350D I'd also like to pair the CPU with an m-atx mobo, and all this for 2 price points: £300 and £400.

I was wondering what the best combos were for those price points? These being combos that would give me a better CPU performance (it is an upgrade afterall).

I have an h80 so a reasonable overclock is something I'd consider.

I should mention that my PC is purely for gaming.

Intel sockets currently confuse me as I haven't taken the time to research them properly, but would I be right in saying that going Intel is a better long term plan? Or will the sockets become outdated reasonably fast and require a mobo replacement?

Thanks in advance.

i5 will give you better performance in games than your 1100T but might still be a bit lacking in next gen games due to it only having 4 core and threads.

The intel sockets will become faster outdated then amd, no real question about that

Backwards compatibility isn't really something that's in intel's dictionary.

I'd say go for the 4770k and choose whatever motherboard that is of a reputable brand, fits in your budget, looks good in your build and has all the features you want on a motherboard. (Z87 motherboard)

I can see them fine, you need the extension that makes the forum a very nice shade of grey. ;)

Keep your 1100t. It's a fine CPU and will be great for next gen games. Higher IPC than Piledriver and 6 cores.

Obviously it won't clock anywhere near as high as a Piledriver but 4ghz+ and you have a great CPU still. I just don't think a 4670k is enough of a worthy upgrade.

@Dom1912I think you did the right thing back when you got the Phenom but yes today it maybe better to go Intel but if you do go to Intel get an [X,H,Q]87 mobo or better don't do [X,H,Q]77.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

Your current cpu should be fine. What are the rest of your specs?

I honestly did the opposite to you, my last build was an I7-960 @ 4.2Ghz... I then moved to the FX-8350@ 4.8 and never looked back. I cant justify the price Intel now want for CPU's with a GPU solution added to them that you will not use. Stick with AMD and save money in my opinion.

Nice to hear that. I used to use a I7 950 and made the mistake of buying a Sandy Xeon. I now run a 8320 @ 4.85ghz (I got lucky, it does 5ghz all day but gets a bit hot) and have been wondering how it would stack up against my 950 given that I don't have them to compare.

interestingly AMD's FX-8000 and new new 9000 series are all the same chips just binned differently. as the 8320 cant run at 4Ghz drawing 145w from the socket its not effecient enough so they sell them as a lower class chip. same with the stupidly prices FX-9XXX etc they are just good over clocked 8350's
