Yeah that's a known bug. Microsoft broke Windows update on Windows 7. Eventually it will go through, it takes me 2 days. I just gave up and made a WSUS server... what a joke.

So the only fix is to upgrade?

a) Don't use Windows Update, which is what I recommend. The lack of a test team at MS means buggy updates out the ass, eg. the now forced updates in W10 are known to brick installs. You're not really missing out on much, I've had less problems not doing Windows Update than doing it.

b) Set up a WSUS server to centrally download the updates and distribute it over LAN, which isn't the easiest thing to do if you have no knowledge of Windows Server/Active Directory/Group Policy/etc.

or c) Do what the MS wants you to do, upgrade. Might sound a bit tinfoil hat but I think they're only doing this to try and get you to upgrade.

I'd just stick with Windows 7, and put up with the updates not working. You'll have no nags to restart or popups to download updates. If you really want the patches you can wait it out.

Well its just that I just built my PC and need to install new updates to make sure everything works 100%

If that's the case and you really want the patches just wait it out, liberally curse MS, and they'll come in eventually.

Yup. Might sound a bit tinfoil hat but I think MS has resorted to breaking their products to get people to upgrade.

Hello,

Does anyone know why Windows 7 just stays on "Checking for Update" and does not actually find an update. I have left my PC like that for over 12 hours and it is still the same.

Thanks

Harry

From what I read its something to deal with how updates are handled with the Windows update service in Win 7. Something that it has to scan a crap load of files to double check what you have and what you dont have. I think my moms laptop took 48 hours to get up to date. Its just how it is. I did hear that a new Win 7 update fixed the issue some what. Just leave your machine connected for a few days and see what happens.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
