What CPU pairs with a GTX 1070?

Considering a build with the GTX 1070.

Is the i5-6600 enough?

6500 is good for a 1080 as well. Don't skimp on the CPU since your GPU is more likely to be replaced.

 

I would get the 6500 since it has four cores and good clock speed.

either get the i5 6600k or the i5 6500. the i5 6600 cost $25 more than the 6500 and only has a .1 ghz increace in clock speed and is super close in price to the 6600K. now to answer your question. yes the i5 6600 is enough even the 6500 is enough to handle the 1070.

that's not true. yes when you get to higher frame rates the cpu starts to limit your performance but not so much when increasing resolution. i have a friend with a gtx 1070 and a i5 6500 and he is doing just fine at 1440p.

durp resolution oops sorry. Faster framerates though makes a huge difference. In AAA titles that are CPU bound games the 6500 will fall behind

Almost every game is CPU-bound as physics and particle effects can be off-set to the CPU which means that each frame has its own calculation. BUT since 144hz monitors can display almost anything below their refresh it isn't a big deal to go with an i5 and high-end GPU.

yeah it would definitely fall behind other cpus for sure but the price increace to being able to overclock the i5 6600k is pretty significant with the requirement of the z170 and a good aftermarket cooler that idk if its really worth it for the extra fps.

100 dollars for less stuttering that is very noticeable? If your willing to pay for 144hz then you need hardware to run it. Its like VR

VR runs very well with an i5-4690K and a 980 Ti. VR runs about the same with 4790K and 980 Ti. VR runs better with a 4790K and a 1080. GPU is more important for VR since there's more that needs to be drawn.

I meant if your going to pay more for the display you need to pay for beter hardware

idk most of my friends who have 144hz monitors only play games like lol and csgo not super demanding games on them. they use their 1440p monitor for the more demanding games.

Display resolution and settings can be changed. We shouldn't be using fringe cases like 144hz gaming as a "standard". This mode of thinking is erroneous and causes people who wouldn't benefit from the added expense to feel a lesser experience.

Theres a reason why I asked what do you have not you have a 144hz monitor so you cant have this
