When it comes to LGA 1151, there are only 2 motherboards: the z170 and the rest. The difference between H110 and B150 is pretty small. Sort all boards by price and pick the first one that has all the features you want, regardless of it being B150 or H110.

Q170? What if you want vpro?

B150 gives you 4 ram slots

99/100 times, it's a matter of "if you need to ask, then it doesn't concern you". If OP had said he needed such feature, then sure, we have to be a bit more careful with the recommendation. That's not the case here, though, he requested a "gaming" mobo.

Besides, my advice still stands: sort all mobos by price and pick the first one that has all the features he wants, including vpro.

I really doubt his step dad is going to need more than 16gb of RAM, though...
