You don't need it, But it is nice to use one (coming from someone who has been using a Wacom tablet for little over a year now).

Those pen tablets are mostly very good for when you want to draw or sketch stuff, but most graphics designers would be fine with out it. You can also use the pathing tool for smooth lines (and you can also sketch on paper and just scan it/make a photo of it and work over it in Photoshop)

What kind of artwork are you going to do?

Like a few said you don't need it, but if you plan to learn more to do with something that requires a tablet and you are going to invest time into it. Then best get one. But keep in mind its not for everyone and the type you buy will matter, Size, Spec etc. So if you are going to do a lot of drawing related work that requires you to have a tablet then you should get one. As for other special equipment No, you dont need anything else other then creativity and hard work .Goodluck with it :)

A pen tablet might be very nice for what you do, since it is much more convenient to draw with a pen, rather than mouse. You can still do it, it's just much harder. You can look into getting a tablet later, since they are not that expensive (you can get one under 65 USD)

Shouldn't you be using Adobe Illustrator in that case?

Photoshop is more for like editing photos from a camera maybe.

Photoshop can do it since it's kind of like the Jack of all trades but master at none (except for photo editing of course). Illustrator would certainly be better at this. Getting Photoshop however is the better value however since it is only $9.99/month coupled with Lightroom. A single application license for Illustrator however would be $19.99/month.

You can use any program for any sort of artwork. It's just what you prefer or like.

'Artwork' is a broad term. A photo edit can be an artwork, a digital painting too and a logo is artwork too.

There are more digital art tools than Adobe stuff alone, there is also stuff like Krita, Gimp, SAI, Sketchbook, Medibang, Corel Painter, Clip Studio Paint, etc. Everyone has one (or multiple) programs they swear by.

How so? I've been doing photography for about 8 years now and a $9.99/month subscription (~$120 per year) for the continuous latest version of both Lightroom and Photoshop is fantastic compared to having to upgrade each program for a separate cost each year anyways. For people who rely on content creation for a job, getting the whole suite of adobe products for $70/month ($840 per year) is a bargain for the same reason.

With any productivity software, I dont believe in upgrading every version.  I used illustrator for a while and the differences between CS6 and CC was minimal.  The only significant difference I found was the online storage of files, but why would I need that?  I think CS6 still works fine even being released 5 years ago.

I might be exceptional (or dumb) but monthly plans wouldn't be worth it for me.
