a Phenon x6 might blow your VRM if  you have a cheap Motherboard

there are hundreds of am3 boards, not all of them can handle a 125w CPU

For someone whose options don't include a new motherboard, one has to make do.

If you are in the U.S or UK and aren't on a tight budget for a rendering build you will want to avoid the AM3+ platform if you want the best bang for your buck which they ironically fail at and the best performance possible.

Look for used one on ebay or such, but if you have $150 to spend on a system an skylake i3, and h110 board (haswell i3, and h81 board for ddr3) may be a better option or a 880k and a fm2+ board if you cannot spend that much.

What AM3 motherboard do you have exactly? Might help us find out what CPU can fit it in and what CPU it supports.
