if above 60hz, I would go 6700k. If your doing 1440p or 1080p at 60hz, the 6600k.

You got the money?  Go i7.

 

Roughly 40% boost from any application that can use more than 4 cores... and is HT friendly.

if you need to multitask, i7 otherwise the i5 is more then fine

Excluding RTS? Heavy on CPU and they love i7's. But for gaming only I'd go with the i5 for 60hz while 144hz would do better with higher clock on i7.

i7 really comes into play with DX12, before that back in the DX11 days it didn't matter as much, but DX12 can take advantage of more cores. either way if you got the money go 6700k over 6600k that thing is a freaking beast, twice as fast at video conversions (tested using freemake video converter to convert 4 x.264 shows to a DVD folder) compared to my laptops 4700HQ (which was already 5-6 times faster then my previous AMD dual core laptops).

When it comes to gaming there was not much difference between an i7 and i5 till 2014. But today games are benefiting from more threads. If you have got the money i7 is best. It will also give you upto 40% boost in hyperthreaded applications.

Not making any content, just that it bothers me any time the frame rate dips below 60fps on ULTRAMAXLOL settings. Right now 1080 @ 60fps which my 4690k handles well enough. It just seems that some games are a large improvement while others are meh.

I'd expect a change in CPU's to occur before that becomes an issue.

 

I also expect AMD to release some top-tier products to cause Intel to accelerate their projects.

Today there are not much games that are benefiting alot from hyperthreading. But in future you are going to see huge improvement  in gaming with an i7 processor over an i5.

How much money do you have? I usually recommend getting the top CPU so that you don't have to worry (trends accounted for) for about 6-8 years.

Linus recommended 6600k max for anyone only gaming, they should post a Titan XP benchmark showing the FPS difference between the two. 6700k and 6600k and not just on Cities Skylines or Singularity.

I'd still recommend getting the top CPU if you can afford it. If not, get the highest i5.
