Best thermal paste for GPU

GeorgeKellow

I am putting a backplate on my MSI GTX 970 and I am going to clean the paste off and apply more. What is the best paste to use?

Whatever is best for a cpu is most likely also best used on a gpu, you do however have the option of using "paste" designed for use on "delidded" cpus as gpus do not have a heatspreader. Recommending a specific paste however is outside of my comfort zone. Hope this helped!

You need to find a paste that is non-conductive. Thickness and cure time shouldn't affect anything.

Choice of TIM doesn't really matter as long as it is a decent named brand it should be OK .  Be wary though of no-name cheap stuff, probably OK for a week or two but then it sets and has to be replaced.

Every other month it seems someone does a YT video on using household 'goo' as TIM the usual outcome is that most household 'goo' can be used as it is only a few degrees warmer in use than proper TIM, what these videos tend not to do is test the long term aspects of household 'goos'.

Based on CPU reviews Gelid Extreme is one of the best so it should be just as good for GPUs.

I haven't had any direct experience with Thermal Grizzly, but it's pretty expensive coming in at $12 for a single gram whereas Gelid GC-Extreme costs $13 for 3.5 grams.

Have there been any comparisons involving any Thermal Grizzly compounds?

Check out this thread. There's more on the web but I'm at work and don't have enough time to search.

Thermal Grizzly is the best but it comes at a cost, no doubt. It dethroned GC-Extreme  up top last year. The only ones ahead are the liquid metal compounds.

I just purchased an 11.1 gram tube of Kryonaut for $30 on Amazon. Yes it seems like a lot but having the best performance is worth the cost to me. That 11.1 gram tube will last you quite a while.

If that isn't an option for you then definitely get the GC-Extreme if you can. Arctic MX-4 is another good one.

@Trev450R  Seems a very big drop to attribute to just using a different thermal paste.

My Dell laptop is over 3 years old, and the thermal paste needed to be changed. Before I change the stock paste, the cpu playing a game was hitting 98'c with no extra cooling, and with my home made cooling fan 90'c. Now running the same game with the Grizzly Kryonaut 85'c with no extra cooling and 74'c with extra cooling.
