1070 required cpu

Go to solution Solved by carsonwen,

You will always have cpu bottlenecks in games that have poor multi thread support. This is common in MMOs for example Guild Wars 2, even with a 6700k clocked at 4.9GHz and a GTX 1080, you will have less than 30FPS in areas where there are massive amount of players. The games does not properly utilize all cores on your CPU and therefore you are bottlenecked by the capability of a single core.

You did not state your resolution. To put it in a simplified way, your cpu calculates the frame, your GPU renders the pixels to create the image. Increasing resolution does not really affect the CPU load, it does however directly affect the load on your GPU. So at 1080p, there is a good chance your cpu can bottleneck your card in a non graphically demanding game, where your card might be able to handle 500 FPS but your cpu can only manage 300FPS. At high resolutions and more graphically demanding games, the GPU will top out well before the CPU does.

If you have a 60Hz monitor, then dont worry about it, you can only benefit from as high as 60FPS, and neither your card or your cpu will bottleneck there.

I would like to know what the lowest common denominator for having a processor that doesn't bottleneck the 1070 i currently have an i5 4460 and i've heard that you need at least an i7 for that card and that seems a little farfetched to me but if it is true i need a recommendation for an upgrade

It all depends on the game and what video settings you use. At lower resolutions like 1080p on some games, you won't find a CPU that doesn't end up bottlenecking the 1070. At 1440p, some games might see improvement with an i7 over an i5, but in most cases, you're going to be well above 60 FPS without any issues. Besides, unless your computer renders at infinity frames per second, there's always going to be a limit.

I would say as of right now you CPU should be able to handle anything out there just with a little to some bottle necking. One of the more intensive CPU game out there I play, is Arma 3 which definitely gets bottle-necked by my A8-7600 processor. Then of course you have The Witcher 3, Crysis:  3, Batman: Arkham Knight:, ect.

can i have some examples of "cpu intensive games"

If you launch Cities Skylines with a big enough city and uncap the framerate, your CPU will bottleneck your video card. It doesn't matter what CPU it is, you will have CPU-limited performance and it will sometimes even be below 60 FPS. MMOs like Guild Wars 2 tend to be very CPU heavy as well, but again, you can't really brute force your way to 60 FPS in that game. GTA V, The Witcher 3, and the recent Battlefield games all need pretty good CPUs as well, but as far as I've ever seen an i5 has no problem keeping those at 60 FPS or above.

If you plan to game at 60 FPS, an i5 is the right processor for you. If you have a 144 Hz monitor, it might benefit you somewhat to get an i7. Stick with your i5-4460 unless you can actually identify it as a problem.

At 1080p if you want 144Hz get an 6700k

At 1440P  6600k is fine

At 2160p 6700k but i wouldn't recommend gaming at 4k with an 1070

so to answer my second question does anyone have a processor that will not bottlneck the 1070

So far I have not had my 6850k bottleneck anything. That being said, is it worth the money for a 6850k for gaming? Absolutely not.

A CPU bottleneck is not a terrible thing unless it is an extreme example. I would stick with what you currently have until it no longer meets your needs. A system will always have a bottleneck somewhere. It all comes down to when it stops meeting your needs.

Honestly you could probably wait a few months, see what happens with some new games that are coming out this fall. It seems to me though that more games are more GPU intensive and require more RAM. My system which has 8gb of ddr3 2133mhz was having issues with BF1, but other than running a bit too hot for my liking everything else was fine.
