Help on my first build

This is my first build. I am ready to buy, but I'm looking for feedback before. I plan on using this build for gaming and for schoolwork. I got the SSD for free and the case is on a deal. I am buying from Canada. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Get 8GB of RAM, a 550W GS or G2 or even a cheaper 650GQ and you'll be able to afford a 120GB SSD.

This has more cost effective parts

the MSI VD boards have solid power delivery and USB 3.1, upgrade to the B150 board if you want 4 sata ports, I guess you need M.2 though?

the RX 470/480 are more cost effective than the 1060, and the 480 should end up faster with Vulkan/DX12 games

and how on earth did you get a 500gb M.2 drive for free?

I disagree with the RAM amount (you want it to be on par with the rest of the computer), go 16gb. Everything else - yes. Slightly larger PSU and an SSD as a boot drive will take you a long way.

I don't think you need to spend that much on a PSU... you should look at some alternatives

My dad is the president of a small engineering firm, he got it for an (any) employee but no one wanted it because they were having troubles with it in their laptops. My dad gave it to me because he wasn't using it.

Also thanks everyone for the help.

No games I've played have utilized over 7 GB and it's really, really easy to add another similar DIMM of RAM into your system later without issues. It would save him time now to get the 120GB SSD immediately and have a fast copy of Windows already running rather than going through a cloning or reinstalling mess later.

Sorry you didn't see, but I do have a 500GB M.2 SSD, so no need for a 120GB one.

This appears to be the same kind of MSI board, but with an M.2 slot, oh wait, I guess it's ITX, not that it matters too much, just go ITX lol

And then if you want the ITX build, the Elite 130 case is pretty cheap in CAD suprisingly, and it'll support long GPUs, everything should fit normally

Would that case support the same motherboard (I'm assuming no). If not could you recommend any?

You are going to overpay for the GPU by almost $100!! The normal Newegg price is $260. Set up an auto-notify and snap it up once in stock.

I think you misunderstood. The price is at $260 USD, but I'm buying in Canada for $360 CAD ($280 USD)

it'll support the ITX board with the M.2 slot I linked

that 1060 still seems overpriced given the 470 and 480 pricing a saw, but still, AMD is probably the way to go for the mid range
