$2000 build for gaming, Premier Pro, web design, and general multitasking. Curious to see what you would do with it.

Go to solution Solved by The1whokill5,

RGB lighting? I would assume when people go with Windows your gonna add some light to it. Would probably spend the left over on some little stuff aswell. Like your build ??

but also would agree with the storage comments, but idk about giving up the 1080. Just because it's not supported well now dosnt mean it won't be in the future, and plus the card games better than the 980 as of right now, x12 is the only downside but I think the drivers will get better in the future and you'll be looking at a solid gpu

Budget/Location

I'm shooting for a $2000 USD budget with a $100 margin for error, and I live in the US. I also will be transferring my recently purchased power supply (EVGA Supernova G2 850W) to the new system, so no PSU needed in the build.

Aim

My main goal for this system is to have a very capable gaming rig that can handle triple monitor 1080p, possibly some single monitor 4k, or 1440p ultra wide formats without breaking a sweat in maxed out settings. Apart from that, I also multitask heavily when I'm not gaming. Multiple Adobe CC programs like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Premiere pro are routinely running, and have been taxing on my 8350 BE.

I want to make this a broadwell-e system. I know there are some benefits to staying with the previous gen for cost savings, but I want to see what the newest generation chips can do.

Monitors

I currently run three 1440p capable monitors on my r9 390. I don't run them in eyefinity for gaming with that GPU, I stick to my middle monitor, but I would like to be able to run anything in triple 1080p without problems.

4. Peripherals

I have a great mouse that i'll be transferring to the new system, but I would like to find some room for a nice mech keyboard as my old keyboard is on it's last legs. As I mentioned before, I have monitors, but I may end up getting a 4k or 1440p ultra wide in the future.

5. Why are you upgrading?

I recently scored a new job that is a considerable pay increase, and my wife and I talked about this as a present to myself for the hard work it took. My current system has worked fine, albeit limited in some areas, but my intent is to take it to the next level and build something I can enjoy and tinker with for several years.

I'm new to pcpartpicker, so I looked in newegg and transferred, but here is what I've been looking at:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Id probably save a bit on the gpu and get a gtx 980/970. The 10xx series aren't supported well yet.

Id Alse get a storage drive with 4x 2tb hdds in raid 10.

A large storage solution is nice, but really these days I prefer to have an SSD for footage scrubbing.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

You can also get a 1tb ssd for that price, but you still going to need a nas/raid array for long term storage.

I would agree, especially if it's a daily thing or you have a lot of projects/footage. I just don't like editing off of said array.

Considering that the 7:th generation of Intel Core processors aren't that far away, not to mention possibly a Ti version of the 1080, I'd say wait a bit. Unless your rig has already broken down and you're in desperate need of getting a new one, it could be nice to see what's coming soon (especially if you wanna future proof it as much as possible). Sure, it might be at a (considerably) higher cost, but then you'll have some more time to save up for it!

This will be a fun build!  I would think about doing 32 GB of RAM for that heavy workload and multi tasking.  You could potentially save a bit on your motherboard, shoot for something a bit cheaper.

The GTX 1080 is definitely the way to go for what you want.  There is no indication of a 1080 ti anytime soon.  Most likely we won't see it until AMD launches VEGA which is probably in 2017.

I forgot to mention, large storage is covered. I have 2x2tb mech drives that I'm transferring over.

thanks for all the quick replies!

Made some changes based on some of the recommendations. I went with a cheaper motherboard and spent the extra on 32gb of ram, and a quieter cooler with 140mm fans. I still like the 500gb SSD for a boot drive in conjunction with my mech drives for long term storage.
