I enjoy using computers and have been pretty interested in computer hardware for a while, so I figured I would mock up a build and once I was satisfied with it, actually build it. Im realizing now that researching myself isn't fool-proof, thats why Im here, obviously. You can see the build here:

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/RxY4sJ

I plan on using it for gaming mostly, but it will also be used for moderate recording and editing. Any input is appreciated :)

nooo don't get i7 6700k and a 1060 that's just so wrong

switch to i5 6600k and upgrade to 1070 instead

Something like is better for the money, the K part isn't really worth it IMO, it's not too much faster for gaming after an OC to 4.5ghz vs the 4ghz turbo on the non K part

Is also includes a superior 1440p 144hz IPS display, comes with free-sync as well

What's your desk set up like? It might be a way better idea to invest in 1080p * 3 than a single 1440p display for around the same total cost, though the 1080p displays would be TN

Also you need a titan XP to max out a 1440p 144hz display, so I'd stick to the mid range GPUs

Or even potentially get a 4k display, there's a $299 4k 28" TN free-sync display around that's pretty nice for the money

I think with you budget you could upgrade to a titan x and downgrade to an i5 6600k, when you overclock the i5 you'll have about the same preformance as your i7 just a little cheaper, I'm sure there's cheaper monitors too unless you absolutely need a 144hz moniter. Not hating on your build just trying to save you some money

Couldn't fit in the high end display with a titan XP, and it would be silly to use a titan XP on a low end display

I think it's worth getting a GSync monitor for your budget. 1440p and 144Hz too.

I'd recommend putting some more cash into that GPU or in the overall look of the PC, if it matters to you. If you want a more stylish PC you could switch it out for something like the MSI KRAIT and switching the case out for the Phanteks Enthoo Pro which has a transparent acrylic window and has a amazing build experience in my opinion.

So in essence something like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/pFpyKZ

In terms of your GPU and processor choice, i'm not totally sure if you'll really need that i7, but if your willing to invest in it then thats fine, but if you were willing to upgrade on the GPU and go for a higher resolution monitor it might be a better option.

Yes for TN, the cheapest IPS G-sync one I see is $750 verus the $200 cheaper free-sync version

G-sync 1440p 144hz IPS display
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/ttnG3C/acer-monitor-xb271hubmiprz

Basically no reason not to get the IPS free-sync version for the same price as G-sync TN displays

modern TN is pretty good, but IPS for the same price is way better

Plus a 480 is fine for 1440p 60fps gaming, the display can be maxxed out later for AAA games with Vega

I think the only value proposition for 1440p Freesync is the Fury X. You can pick one up for $400 and upgrade to Vega later.

Or that ya, but you lose performance per dollar going past the 480/1060

also that 2TB hard drive you have in there is one of the heavily used like rack mount drives, it's why it's so cheap, probably not 100% reliable for a daily use rig

Do you mean that the drive is not shipped new? Or that it's just a drive made for data centers?

TBH the only disadvantage of datacenter drives is that they're louder than Desktop ones given the same RPM

Kind of, they've been field proven, but also kind of ran into the ground, hence why they were pull and relisted for sale, i wouldn't really trust my data with them for the long term, but they're probably fine for a NAS

Wow. Thank you guys very much for all the advice, and so quickly. I will definitely consider upgrading my GPU to a 1070 as most of you advised, though I feel like I may stick with the 6700K over the 6600K, just so that I know if I start editing more in the future I wont need to spend that money again. Also I appreciate all the monitor suggestions but I really dont plan on trying to have the best display out there.

I'd still say non K i7 6700, with a better IPS free-sync display, and an RX 480 or Fury X, but that's just me

no reason not to buy the better display(IPS 144hz) when the price is the same

i7 comparison, are you going to use any of the features a higher chipset would give you?
