Am i bottlenecking my gtx 970 with my amd 7870k?

OK so i have had this computer for a little over 6 months and i have noticed my 970's fps sometimes barely compare to benchmarks online. I sort of cheaped out on my processor b/c i was young and stupid, and now i fear it has come back to bite me in the ass. The games i play (currently, they tend to fluctuate between, but they trend to be more cpu intensive than others) are battlefield one (beta), witcher 3, fallout 4, rust, subnautica, gta 5, GMOD, 7DTD, dayZ and No man's sky. The first parts list is my current, and the second i the one i am considering buying.

Depends on the game but in the worst cases yes, your APU will most likely bottleneck the GTX 970! (BF1 is a good example)

It's all a matter of the game and the settings. Overall, though, the APU is rather weak and will hold the 970 back.

 

As for what to buy, I'd get a Z97 + 4790k rather than getting the skylake setup. You are investing in new RAM and you are getting a mobo that won't allow OCing of either RAM nor CPU. Not to mention that the 4790k is slightly better than the 6600k.

 

So I'd advise going for that, unless you intend to build a new PC with the old parts (in which case go for a fresh Skylake setup).

Thanks! @imakuni, but my theme for the tower is black/red. So do you have any other black/red mobos to recommend?

I have a Zotac GTX 970 4GB with an AMD A8-7600 and I've been looking into the same issue. It's frustrating right? Short-answer, pretty much any on the FM2+ platform will bottleneck a GTX 970 to some degree on more modern games. The A10s with significant overclock, or the 880k are the best shots for FM2+ (in my uninformed opinion) but you're still gonna bottleneck. Like I've been told by the forum, wait for AM4 or go Intel. Especially when I realised my A8 was on-par with an entry-level i3 >_>.
