Is a 1080 bottle-necked by a 6600k CPU?

Hey guys,

So there was recently some chatting on reddit about the i7 vs i5, and some users were commenting that the 6600k was a bottleneck for the GTX 1080. Some of them suggested that a 6700k paired with a GTX 1070 would perform better in games than the 6600k/1080. What do you guys think about that?

I just recently pulled the trigger on my first build, and i couldn't fit both the 6700k and 1080 into my budget, so i went with the 6600k instead.

Did i do a mistake? should have i gone for the 6700k and 1070 instead?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but i'm quite new to this.

Yes don't worry it will be fine. The 1070 and 1080 do like it when you have a 2k or 4k monitor. Personally if you have a 6600k and a 1080 that's a good setup.

Yes, i also have the Acer XB271HU, which i believe will serve well in gaming. I know i could have skimped on the display to get the 6700k, but that was non-negociable for me as i'm very demanding with my displays.

Thing is  you can get the new i7 kaby lake if you really want an i7 for the extra threads in the future as they will use the LGA 1151 chipset like the 6600k and 6700k and sell your i5 on eBay.

Its not the type of processor that would bottleneck the GPU its the Frequency its running at. If your proc is above 3.5GHZ it shouldnt bottleneck even the most powerfull GPU there is :)

The 6600k will bottleneck the 1080 depending on the resolution and the gaming being played.

I play at 1440p, max settings. i am planning to over-clock the shit out of the processor, as much as it allows me. Will it be a bottleneck?

It shouldn't be. At 1080p with high refresh rates (>120Hz) it becomes a problem.

At 1440p, it won't be a bottleneck even if you underclock it to 3 GHz.

It has been proved time and time again that an i5 6600K can bottleneck something like the GTX 1070 and the GTX 1080. The idea that an i5 6600K won't bottleneck it is ridiculous. I'll point you towards Techspot's Overwatch benchmarks to see it for yourself. The i7 6700K's hyperthreading and higher stock speed can prove to be advantageous in many titles and offers more stability in comparison to an overclocked i5.

BUT

That doesn't mean an i5 6600K is bad. It offers a better price/performance and the GPU shouldn't necessarily be sacrificed to fit in the i7. It's a perfectly capable CPU.

Bottom line - if you have the budget for an i7, get it. Otherwise, the i5 will do a decent job.

This is with a 1070, we're talking about a 1080 here, a signifnicantly more powerful card... It might bottleneck even at 1440p imho.

I wish Linus or Luke can do a test between the 6700k/1070 and 6600k/1080, where CPU's are clocked at the same speed. I tried to find anything on the internet between the 2, but there is no clear test or evidence supporting each side.

Dude relax. There is no need to worry. Your CPU is fine. Some People completely missunderstand what a bottleneck is.
