University Gaming Laptop

Hello Everyone,

 

I am in need of a new laptop to use in university, however I'm conflicted in what to get considering Nvidia just released their Pascal line of laptop GPUs.

 

I need a laptop that can hold its own against games today and play them at decent settings. I am also fortunate in that I can afford to spend around or above $1500 on the laptop.

 

Another really important consideration for me is build quality, I need the laptop to last for the next 3-4 years.

 

Right now I'm quite lost in that I don't know what I should be looking for or if I'm looking in the right places. I would very much appreciate any suggestions or help.

Linus, as well as a few friends of mine own and use a Razer Blade as their daily driver laptop. I would say go with that.

Still a 900 series gpu and a moderen 1070 would outperform for the same price. Also 14" screen

Linus, as well as a few friends of mine own and use a Razer Blade as their daily driver laptop. I would say go with that. 

Could get a Razer Core if you really wanted to spend the extra $$ on it.

No the Razer Blade is not very good at all. The battery sucks a lot and so does the keyboard. The keys will randomly break sometimes. I would suggest looking at the new laptops with 1070s in them or 1080s. They might be a bit expensive but miles better then this. The new EVGA laptop looks promising as it is made for over clocking but has a high premium of $2700.

Just keeping this here as a If the Blade isn't very good, why does Linus use one daily? That's why I recommended it, that and I have a few friends that use them daily as well, and never had any issues with them.

Agreed. Like I stated above. You can get a 1060 around $1500 and if adding extra cash you can have a 1070 for a laptop which works better than 970m

Because it is light weight and it was free. It is basically a macbook that is black with RGB. There are much better options

just bought a Dell XPS 15 9550. i7, 8GB, 960M, 256GB PCIe ssd. This thing screams and the 960M handles doom on ultra and WoW at max settings. I hear you can get 60+ fps in overwatch at med-high settings. Nicest formfactor i've ever seen in a laptop. I paid 1699 CAD for it. I highly recommend seeing one in person.

Hi Antony, I appreciate the video, however, it's not relevant to me. I am an international student, so having a desktop and taking it to and from college in another country is impractical. I do however see his point in the video and it makes sense, but only really if I'm staying in the country I am attending college in.

MSI and ASUS makes really high quality laptops

I was considering the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71, however, reading the reviews I was worried that the laptop would not have the durability I need. I need this laptop to last for the next 3-4 years, and I'm not sure the laptop will be durable enough to last that long. 

 

That said, I must say I've never bought a windows laptop before, only ever built a windows desktop. So I'm inexperienced with all the laptop brands, can I be assured that this is of at least reasonable quality?

I was actually seriously considering the Blade, however, with Nvidia releasing their new GPUs for laptops, I wasn't sure if getting this would be the right move any more. When Razer releases their updated laptop with the 1060 or what not, this would drop in price drastically. 

 

I was hoping Razer would have some sort of information as to when they would update their laptop with the new hardware, but I couldn't find any, hence this post about my other options.

NO NO NO

Why not to get a Razer Blade:

 

1. They ALL thermal throttle, even the 15w model

2. No quality control at all, so you might get one that is okay where nothing is broken, but you might also get one where something doesn't work like it should

3. Shitty build quality, they use okay materials, but a four year old can put it better together

4. Keyboard is a god damn joke and should be something you get one a 600$ laptop not 2k laptop

5. "support" they are useless, much worse than asus and that says a lot.

 

It is just a shit laptop, that would only be okay for office work, because that is the only thing it can do without overheating.

Why not to get a Razer Blade:

 

1. They ALL thermal throttle, even the 15w model

2. No quality control at all, so you might get one that is okay where nothing is broken, but you might also get one where something doesn't work like it should

3. Shitty build quality, they use okay materials, but a four year old can put it better together

4. Keyboard is a god damn joke and should be something you get one a 600$ laptop not 2k laptop

5. "support" they are useless, much worse than asus and that says a lot.

 

It is just a shit laptop, that would only be okay for office work, because that is the only thing it can do without overheating.

Alright, that's pretty compelling, thank you for the information, I guess I'll be staying quite a ways away from Razer.

 

That said, you didn't actually recommend anything, do you have any recommendations? What about @Pendragon's recommendation of the NP8152-S NOTEBOOK from Sager?
