I've tried cloning my old hdd to an ssd many times for my mom's laptop. When I am able to boot into windows it "prepares my desktop" and there is a blank desktop. I am able to start explorer.exe but i can't do anything from there. I think that the recovery partition letter got switched or something during cloning put im not sure. (this was an hp laptop that had a recovery parition and 2? other partitions besides windows 7). BTW the last cloning thing i used was macrium reflect, and have tried acronis 2015 and some others.

I use clonezilla bootable cloner, works everytime but you need 2 sata ports

To clone to a HDD in windows use the EaseUS Cloner, make sure you clone ALL partitions for both methods

Desktop: i7-6700K / Asus Z170 S / H100i V2 / LPX 2400Mhz 16GB / 960 EVO 250GB / 2x 860 EVO 500GB / RM750i  / NZXT H440 XB271H + Z22n Monitors

Laptop: Thinkpad T450s / i7-5600U / 12GB / 860 EVO 500GB

She doesn't have to, you do it for her.

All you have to do is just install a couple programs and move the files back after clean installing.

I doubt she uses dozens of programs that take up many GBs each and take hours to install.
