Can my power supply handle this?

zJordan

I plan to upgrade to Skylake in a few months, and my power supply is a Seasonic S12II-520 (https://seasonic.com/product/s12ii-520/)

Build would be as follows:

CPU: i5-6600k (I intend on overclocking to 4.5GHz)

MOBO: Asus Z170 Pro Gaming

GPU: GTX 970 @ Stock Voltage (but with an overclock, on my current build it will boost up to 1420MHz, so that would likely be my base clock)

SSD: Samsung Evo 850 250GB

HDD: WD Blue 1TB 7200rpm

RAM: 16GB DDR4 (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15)

I don't want to buy a new PSU yet, but I will if I have need a new one. I can hold off on an overclock if you don't think this is capable of safely sustaining a pretty high overclock but yeah any answers would be appreciated, if I have missed anything in my planned spec list (I have pretty much half of it in my current build except obviously CPU, MOBO and RAM).

If my PSU isn't good enough for what I plan to do could you also list some suggestions please? preferably modular, this non-modular thing is painful.

EDIT: Thanks guys, I think I got my answer :) (Fuck this place is better for tech support than anywhere)

It would be fine, the 970 is has a 145W spec, OCed it might push over 200 depending on the card then the cpu shouldn't be 150 overclocked, so 500+ is good

It's fine, but did notice you don't mention a CPU cooler for that overclocking??

Alright man, thanks for the quick response, my concern is my PSU can't supply enough power to my motherboard.

As you can see in the picture, I presume +3.3v and +5v rails are to power the CPU? If the i5 can consume up to 150watts and my PSU is only rated at +130w over the two rails is that fine?

It's likely going to be a Corsair Hydro H60i, or I may use my current Cooler Master Hyper 212, not to sure yet.

No worries, just wanted to check you did know that the 6600K doesn't come with a stock cooler... looking like a nice build :)

Yeah, generally I think its a good idea, you only really buy a K if you want to overclock and any decent overclock is going to shred an Intel stock cooler to bits.

The CPU is powered off the 12 volt rail ;)

That PSU will do fine/nicely with your build so no worries indeed :D

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

What I meant by 150W was a rough estimate of what the max possible is, you'll be fine as far as the cpu is concerned, also wrong rail

Ahh :) thought 12volt rail was responsible for GPU... why I don't know :D

Good to know though, I have a lot of headroom on the 12volt rail for a GPU and CPU overclock :)

Yeah, I haven't used a stock cooler on any of my computers in the last 10 years or so, LOL... have used them on my customers, relatives and friends though as they usually want the cheapest option, even though that is only like $20 for a half decent air cooler. I prefer to keep mine as silent as possible too, not that easy with a stock cooler, LOL.

Just my opinion, but don't think your CPU power draw will be anywhere near as much as that.. mine's OC'd to 4.4Ghz and is nowhere near that much power draw, so you'll be fine :)
