which cpu to buy for specific useage?

i am creating a new build in mid january 2017 and have just been looking into geting an intel chip specically the i7 6700K

My list on pcpartpicker is below

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/sxWnLD

i am going to be going to university in wales soon and am wanting a pc to last longer than 3 years, i use autodesk maya for modelling 3d objects for games as well as Unity, Unreal engine 4 and other sculpting programs like zbrush.

i also use programs like adobe after effects as well and may be using things like premier for video editing.

for gaming i do do a lot of gaming in my spare time especially for new games that come out but some retro as well

would this cpu be overkill or not enough?

if not enough what would you suggest ?

i have also just downloaded linus's spreadsheet on cpus from his new video which is below

p.s. cheers linus for the video ive been looking for something like this for ages

I'd get a 550 W or 650 W power supply unless you plan on doing any SLI in the future.

I wouldn't say the i7-6700K is "overkill" but there are cheaper and still very effective alternatives. While it is the best mainstream CPU on the market right now that money can buy, if you don't plan on doing any overclocking, you could get an i7-6700 and a H170 chipset motherboard or the lower-end B150 or H110 chipsets. The i7-6700 will still last you for several years at least, most likely longer. If you get a non-Z170 motherboard, you can't do any SLI, so choose wisely.

You could also get the cheaper i5-6600K. The only main differences are in cache, clock speed, and lack of hyperthreading. You can overclock to make up for the difference for the clock speed, but you cannot make up for a lack of hyperthreading or cache (cache isn't really a big deal - there's enough on the 6600K). You might want an i7 though for what you're doing.

i will get the 650W psu just in case i do want to do SLI later and am currenlty chaging the motherboard to something that is capable of SLI a lot of the Z170's are capable of SLI. is it good to trust this ?

i7's are a must have for me at the moment as my fx 4300 from amd is not packing the correct punch i may need later on

if you're building in 2017, i'd suggest you wait until late december 2016 or early january 2017 to ask about the build.. AMD might be releasing zen at that time, AMD vega GPUs will be released by that time and component prices will change so a build now will have a different price in 2017.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

If i understood correctly you plan on purchasing the parts mid January 2017?

Based on your usage I would say definitely get something with as many cores and hyperthreading, soooo i7 I guess. But if you will be making the purchase in January, AMD might have the new ZEN CPUS available, it might be interesting to see once they are released how they actually perform, for your usage they might be the best bang for your buck...

Good Luck!

i am going to be building this in January 2017, i took a look at the amd cpus with zen architecture coming soon and yes Intel may have a rival again with AMD. i do want the gtx 1080 for my system as it betters my current gtx 750 ti super clock from evga.

i do understand that prices will drop come January and if it does then sweet i can spend a bit more on peripherals and other bits and bobs.

if it does turn out that zen cpus from amd are better than the 6700k by a long shot then i will buy one of them at a later date but for what i want and what i use currently i don't think ill need anything better than the 6700K

shimejii : i have taken a look at the system requirements of the programs i want and they seem to be fine with the cpu i want and with the cores it uses.

cheers guys for the support !
