So i have the option of either building a pc for around £450 with an fx 6300 16gb ram rx 460 and a hybrid drive or get a custom laptop from pc specialist for around £750 but with an i7 6300hq 16gb ram 1tb hdd 128gb m.2 ssd with a gtx 940m (gpu doesn't matter) but i'm stuck choosing which one i should get. I'll be doing programming and both will be runing Linux

thanks in advance

It's an i5-6300HQ, there is no i7-6300HQ.

And if you need portability, get a laptop. If you don't get a desktop.

This doesn't really make sense.. Why would you have only 450 for a desktop but 750 for a laptop?

My opinion, stay far away from under 1000$ laptops. I've had nothing but bad experiences.

i7 2600k @ 5GHz 1.49v - EVGA GTX 1070 ACX 3.0 - 16GB DDR3 2000MHz Corsair Vengence

Asus p8z77-v lk - 480GB Samsung 870 EVO w/ W10 LTSC - 2x1TB HDD storage - 240GB SATA SSD w/ W7 - EVGA 650w 80+G G2

3x 1080p 60hz Viewsonic LCDs, 1 glorious Dell CRT running at anywhere from 60hz to 120hz

Model M w/ Soarer's adapter - Logitch g502 - Audio-Techinca M20X - Cambridge SoundWorks speakers w/ woofer

Programming doesn't require a quad core, takes as much power as basic word editing.

The two systems you have picked is pretty unreasonable as the intel one is better for everything besides graphics.

£300 is more then enough for a 1080p monitor and peripherials. £100 should do.

 •E5-2670 @2.7GHz • Intel DX79SI • EVGA 970 SSC• GSkill Sniper 8Gb ddr3 • Corsair Spec 02 • Corsair RM750 • HyperX 120Gb SSD • Hitachi 2Tb HDD •

Depending on the programming he could need it for rendering. Like game development using 3D engines

Choices should be the other way around: Cheaper laptops without integrated graphics are better with an A10 mostly (except for 6200 based intel laptops but those are still not as common) while desktops are unrivaled by AMD as of the writing of this.

Oh I know why you pick it. I just personally feel that cases are important and as someone who's made the mistake of cheaping out on cases twice I always try to fit at least something nice and low cost like an NZXT S340 or a Phanteks Entho Pro M

If you *need* to cut corners, thermal'fake' is cheap chinese knockoff cases, but they still have most of the features a similar high quality case would have (with less finesse tho)

If you need to cut corners I'd go with something that's very reliable even when second hand like a CPU ironically enough which tend to be fine even second hand, specially for non-overclockable lower TDP chips.

But this is as I said, personal preference not my recommendation though.

Well, the only thing "reliable" about a case is that it doesnt fall apart.

If anything i'd suggest a better power supply, i'm not a fan of the evga B series, but honestly it's good enough.
