Hi I have the chance to take two 16 bay HDD storage racks. I am noob at server stuff so kinda confused at how I'd connect it to a PC.. server.

I am actually building my first server PC (xeon 6 core 12 threads w3680, only need some thermal paste and a case everything else I got), my plan for this is to have my own personal cloud storage. I plan on having 3TB(or4TB) Red drives in raid, at first only 2 drives then 4 then 6 and so on. (1 drive backing up one other)

I looked up these which basically would be enough for me.. but the ones I could get also have 16x500gb hdd's(would be good for experimenting) and it's about same price.. except it looks like this:

Spoiler

IBM_5020_RearView_FCController_100109.jp

Well older model but quite similar.. So my question is, is it worth getting it and if I do is there someone here who could help me set it up? Or just guide me to some place to see how it is.

(honestly feels like I'm asking a stupid question and this might be as simple as connecting the network ports and using some PCI card and a bit more)

Welp, thank you :)

It's an IBM DS4200, could I use it trough ISCSI  without much problems except for overcoming the missing informations that I have to learn? I'll be surely needing a network card as the motherboard I have only has 1 RJ45.

Would you suggest me getting it and figuring things out on the way?

I have a few new fibre cables laying around. Also have a fibre card, though looks damaged but buying one does not seem to be a problem either.

it's hard working with OEM servers,

this is one of the many reasons you see custom servers at a work place when you visit the server room

this exact reason, compatibility.

what i would do is sell the individual components (you will get more money that way), and build a new server out of the money you made from selling the components

****SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH IT'S REALLY TERRIBLE*****

Been married to my wife for 3 years now! Yay!

Hmm the only reason I would have wanted this 2xDS4200 16 bay is because the price is just slightly more than the barebone case that I linked in my first post. Thought I could use the 500gb drives to learn and experiment with raid before I'd install 4TB drives in it too.

I found for like £39 4Gbps 2 port fibre PCIe cards but getting these knowing it wont work I'd rather not get anything. If somehow it can be set-up like storage letters on windows it would be great. But compatibility might as well be a hit or miss I guess no?
