VG248QE still a good buy in 2016?

gonvres

Its a fairly old screen now. But there really isn't many valid competitors in the 24 inch 144hz class.

how much are you buying it for?

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

1080p 144Hz tech hasnt really changed, so many pros still use that monitor (not using "still" in a bad way). I wouldnt be worried nor think twice before getting one.

4690K // 212 EVO // Z97-PRO // Vengeance 16GB // GTX 770 GTX 970 // MX100 128GB // Toshiba 1TB // Air 540 // HX650

Logitech G502 RGB // Corsair K65 RGB (MX Red)

VG248QE has been superceded by PG248Q.  Same physical panel itself, but with gsync and proper functioning controls.  It's basically like the VG248QE with the 'beta' gsync unit, except properly designed and well done.  Still has Lightboost (3d vision 2) mode, and ULMB mode.  Unlike the VG248QE, I believe there are finally gamma adjustments.  No gamma adjustments on the VG248 was extremely annoying.
