Am I cutting it fine?

GeorgeKellow

I want to SLI my build (I like the looks of an SLI build) My dad said he'd buy a gpu for passing my A levels *Max is £250 I think.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/GeorgeKellow/saved/  This is my parts list. Would I be cutting it close to 550w if I got 2 970's?

Shit, should note that my i5 is oc to 4.1ghz

It should be ok , but you're cutting it close

You'd be cutting it pretty fine, but it should be ok.

The TDP of 2x 970s is around 300, leaving you around 250W for the rest of the system.

honestly , after looking into it , it should be ok . I mean dual 970 uses about as much power as a 290x , which will run well on 550w. Just don't go doing any extreme overvolting on your cards .

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

I'm not really planning to anyway. Is there anyway of getting 'more' wattage out of my system? Not overclocking my cpu is one idea, not really down for that

maxwell power consumption doesn't go much higher even when overclocked , so even with your OC cpu , you should be fine.

if I do get another 970, how many watts would I have spare? More to the point, what happens if I go over it? Will it shut down or fry my psu:?

you should have a good 50w spare . If you go over the limit however , the pc just shuts down .

Is there a way (Or app) to show how much I am pulling from the wall?

you can get a power  meter on amazon , but if you do that you need to take your your psu efficiency into account ( number from the meter will be 10-20% higher than what your psu is delivering to your pc )

like this

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

I went onto cooler masters psu calculator and said that I had sli 970 and it recommend me a 552w psu

God there's a crazy fuckton of misinformation in this thread...

To @GeorgeKellowYes 550W is enough but don't get too crazy with overclocking the GPUs cuz 970s have a ton of headroom for that sort of thing. The two in SLI with Guru3D's 3960X super overclocked got to 439W under max stress http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_970_sli_review,4.html Your CPU uses less power so don't worry to much there. If you want to bump it up by 100 watts then it wouldn't be a bad decision.

|PSU Tier List /80 Plus Efficiency| PSU stuff if you need it.

So to recap. SLI with my current setup (i5 oc to 4.1ghz) and my evga gs 550w psu Is possible but don't go turning dials up to 100000000 (Keep it reasonable) but if I do grab a 650w psu or higher, then that'll give me a bit more headroom?

Yes. 970s generally have a decent amount of headroom, being able to consume more than a GTX 680 with a hefty enough overclock. Also, what voltage is your i5 at for 4.1 GHz? I got a 4670k and my motherboard is kind of sticking me to 1.158V and I cannot get the CPU above 4.0GHz xD

Far better than I've done xD 1.2V at 4.1GHz isn't anything special though, pretty middle of the road, still better than my chip. Won't use a ton of power.
