No. Needs to be same generation and series number to SLI. So to SLI a 970, it has to be with another 970 only.

No, it needs to be that exact same card, you can have them be different brands though, for example one asus and one msi card, but not a 970 and a 1070. if i were you i'd sell that 970 and save to buy a 1080 instead :)

What you're referring to with DX12 is multi-adapter, not SLI. SLI is the proprietary technology from Nvidia that allows you to use two GPU with the same chip together (only two 970 for example). Multi-adapter is a feature that developers can implement with DX12 that allows the player to use different GPU (980Ti + 1070 for example, or 980Ti + Fury X) to render different stuff in-game. There aren't a lot of games supporting this feature right now, and I think it will be a while before we see this becoming more widespread

In AMD cases some gpu's can be crossfired even if they are not the same card

They're the same core, thats why they can be used in XFire
