RAID0 with Intel chipset raid? Performance hit?

i was reading about raid0 with the Intel chipset controller.

i read that this kind of raid is not hardware raid, because there is no actual raid processor and cache memory. Some say it is called fake raid, because all the calculations for the raid are done by the CPU.

with this in mind, I am wondering what kind of a performance hit it can make.

 

if I use two smaller ssds in raid0, the loading times are shorter, but then, while actually in game, the fps might be worse because the CPU is also being used for the raid calculations.

that is against a single bigger SSD in ahci.

 

what kind of hit does raid0 with the Intel chipset make on the system performance?

The performance cost should be negligible. I have two 500gb ssds in raid 0 using intel rapid storage and I noticed no lower benchmark scores or in game results.

Should perform fine, but just buy one bigger ssd. If you need a faster ssd, buy a pcie ssd

RAID 0 as well as RAID 1 have basically no overhead, they don't really do any calculations. Because of this software raid works great for them. Other RAID levels like 5 and 6 require really heavy calculations to make the parity data, those typically run poorly on software based RAIDs. 

 

However for your needs if you need more speed, you'd be better of getting an nvme pcie based SSD like the 950 pro.
