Turn old router into repeater

Go to solution Solved by littlepro01,

ok I found the problem...

in the field that said <password>, I only wrote password, thinking it was a password to recover the file later.. however it is actually the router control panel password. I put that password in and it is working now.... Thank you for trying to solve the problem

Ok when I build be computer I did not get a wifi card for it because it was intended to remain in the same room as the router and is connected by and Ethernet cable, how ever I would like to move my computer up into my room. I understand it is easy to buy a wifi pcie card and install it but my family recently got a new router, and has nothing to do with the old one. I want to turn this router into a wifi repeater because 1. The wifi is terrible on the side of my house without the router, and 2. My house is 25 years old and doesn't have Ethernet running through the walls and I would like to have my wifiless computer in my room, but don't want to buy a wifi card, adapter, or use power line... I guess I should be clearer on the router I want to repurpose. It's it an Actiontec MI424-WR revision D, (The new router is revision I) I know that DD-WRT is a thing that supports this router however I couldn't get it installed. The only tutorial is on the wiki and didn't work for me, as well as not being detailed enough. If anyone knows how to A: use the router as repeater without installing DD-WRT, B: Install DD-WRT on my router, a video would be greatly appreciated... I prefer the tutorial to be on Windows 10, however I can load up a Ubuntu live cd is need to.

thank you for reading all of this and I hope it made sense.

Yes, step 15 of installing red boot is where I ran into trouble.... When I put in the command it says can't determine flash size!

Step 15 is for creating a backup, which apparently is not going to help with revision D since " Presently there is no known method for using JTAG on a Revision D, because the header was removed in that revision. "

So basically skip step 15 but be sure to keep in mind you can't go back if you execute step 16. Ever.

So if there are errors in step 16 or after, that router just turned into a plastic box with rare metals inside.

I don't think that's correct, because I get the same error in 16, and the JTAG warning is after step 16, and the code in 16 looks like it's loading on the .bin file
