Dual CPU, Different CPUs?

I read other forums and trolled google for a bit, most of the stuff was relatively old and obvious.

My question is I have a dual CPU mobo and a Xeon. Would it be possible to add something like a i7 67xxk or what not in the other socket and then have the cpus just do different tasks.

Basically it's a noob way to put two computers into one large desktop. I don't need a speed boost or same monitor or "efficient" resource management or anything, but I would appreciate any feedback

(In before a bunch of views and three people saying hell no).

Thanks

You would need the same exact model and stepping cpu to have all of the cpus to work in any multi socket board. Also some xeons will not run in a dual cpu configuration like the e3 series which only have 1 qpi link (qpi link dictates how many cpus it can run per board)

also all "core" cpus only have 1 qpi link so it will never be able to run in a dual socket motherboard.

pretty sure you cant do that on one motherboard, but there are cases that allow for multi PC setups in one case, i think there is one in the Enthoo lineup from Phantecs IIRC

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Xeons use a different socket than i7 6700ks, so there is no motherboard that supports both.

This is for an older Xeon, but I think the info is still relative: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/272899-28-different-processors-dual-socket-motherboard

It looks like you would have to look at the documentation for your xeon cpu and see what other cpus will work with it.

Thanks a lot SLAYR, that's what I was afraid of!

Thanks for your reply, sorry I wasn't that clear. I would clearly have chosen a cpu that fits the socket ;)

Only xeons can have more than one CPU per motherboard.

So you would still be limited to only xeons.
