Is my A8 5500 bottlenecking my GTX 970?

Hello,

I have an AMD A8 5500 cpu and a GTX 970 gpu (as the title suggested).

I'm trying to play GTA 5 but I feel like my performance could be better. It's not just GTA that the performance suffers in, but that was just the last game I played. There's a handful of others too. Anyway, I know my graphics card should be able to handle the game with ease at the settings I've got it at, but I rarely seem to exceed 40FPS at max.

Help?

You gave the example of GTA V which is quite taxing on the CPU. And your A8 5500 is really outdated, any modern i3 would do better than this :D You should consider an upgrade to enjoy the potential of your 970 because you will be limited in a lot of games, even if they're not CPU intensive.

CPU : i7 8700k @5GHz, GPU : ASUS GTX 1080 Ti STRIX, RAM : 2x8Go 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance, MB : ASUS Prime Z370-A, PSU : CM V850, Case :  NZXT S340, CPU Cooler : NZXT Kraken x62, Monitor : Acer Predator XB271HU 27" 1440p 165Hz, OS : Windows 10 Home 64 bits

GTA V is quite CPU intensive so in that game yes, most likely you are experiencing a CPU bottleneck.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Do this:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Okay, cool thanks.

So would I get a bottleneck with an i3 6100 or should I be good with that?

No, the i3 should be fine with a 970.

You should never aim for i3 or lower if you like gaming(and never pick amd cpu for gaming. Atleast not until we have seen if Zen turns the tables). Atleast get an i5(even that will bottleneck a 1070 or a 1080, but not anything below that). Getting an i3 now, will only cause you to experience bottlenecking in a year or so(if you run a 970 until then).

Get a i5 6600K or a i7 6700K if you want to switch now. If you cant afford that, save until you do. Getting shit because you dont have the cash, will only result in a shit experience too. Once you have the cash for it, you will get an awesome gaming experience, and have a CPU that lasts many years.

Intel Core i7 6700K@4,3GHz - Asus Z170 Pro Gaming - Corsair Vengeance 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 - Evga SuperNova 750W PSU - Samsung EVO 500GB SSD - Gainward GTX 1080 GS - BenQ xl2411T 144hz - Cooler Master Haf-X Big Tower Nvidia Edition
