External hard drive on network

Hello I have a 1tb external drive I just wanna find out how to put it on my network so I can access it from anywhere i just don't know how to setup an ftp server from within my router. Thank you for your time

you can share the drive from inside windows.

not all routers support drive sharing you will have to find that out.

Go to the hard drive itself. Right click it and then go on properties, once you've done that, click on the " advanced sharing" tab and select "share this folder" and select a share name for it.

Some routers support it. You just have to plug them into the USB ports on them if there are there and then set them up in the router settings

The cheapest options are:

 

A. learn how to use your existing router to enable the FTP server if it has it.

B. Install FTP software on your desktop (filezilla server) and configure your firewalls to allow external access. 

C. Get a new router with FTP and/or Cloud features. 

 

The least cheap options:

 

Buy a NAS device that you can put the drive into/plug into the back that advertises features for external WAN access. - but that will be double/triple the cost of your actual drive.

I think this is purely just a basic NAS - I don't see how you'd install Plex on it, unless you had a separate machine running Plex and were storing the data on this...
