I think you should get a Intel E84000 https://www.amazon.com/Intel-E8400-Processor-Socket-LGA775/dp/B00116SLYY . Theyre abit hard to find however it is an awesome cpu for gaming and editing. The amazing thing is they only cost about 55 dollars and work like a charm.

will the 6600k fit in an AM3+ sockets?

No, it's lga1151 socket.

Am3+ is a dying socket since the cpus arent that good but the fx 8350 is the most you should spend on it (the fx-9000 lineup are just 8350 binned to a higher clock)

If 200 pounds are around max that you can spend i recommend an i5 6500 with a cheap/good mobo (this will probably be around 240 pounds, slightly more or less with cheapest 8gb ram included) or an i3 with a cheap mobo+ram which will be probably less than 200 pounds or exactly 200

If you're stuck on AM3+, the 8350 is all I'd recommend, and even that generates enough heat to be sketchy on cheap mobos. If you can scrounge up the cash, an H110M mobo and an i5-6500 (or 6400) would be ideal, but even an i3-6100 and new mobo would be better *and* be upgradeable.

2007 called. It wants its CPU back. C2Ds are fine for HTPCs, light duty workstations and "my first computer" stuff, but their days as a viable gaming CPU are long over. They are in no way better than AM3+ CPUs.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I'll echo the others that an i5-6600K is a good fit for that budget. Although if you don't intend to take advantage of the ability to overclock, you may as well get the i5-6500 or i5-6600 and save a bit of money.

If you've got an H170 motherboard, save some pennies and grab the 6500 or 6600 instead of the 6600K. You can't (or at least shouldn't) overclock the K on an H170 board.

That said, good choice.

i5-6400 gets my vote. Cheapest i5 of the bunch and you can VR on it (if a 4460 can, what more can a processor 10-15% better can do) albeit the lower clock speed.

There are some benches that say a 6400 has way lower minimum frames if you compare it to a 4460/6500, i have seen them before when i was planning to buy a pc and it seems oh so not worth it. It was on youtube but I dont remember the video title
