Removing Hard Drives from a RAID for Transport

Hey Everyone, I'm new here and have a question about transporting hard drives in a RAID.  I'm moving overseas and I want to remove my hard drives from my RAID 0 to make sure they are not damaged in transportation.

Can I remove the HDD's and install them back in the same SATA ports without issues?  I'm using RAID controller on-board my Gigabyte motherboard and some Intel RST "stuff".

Not sure if I'm allowed to ask questions like this on LTT Forums, but I would appreciate any clarification.

BAD IDEA

Yes it work fine. You can plug them into what ever port you want and it work. If there ssds its fine to leave it in the system. It its hdds you should pack them in a foam box.

Here is a good hdd boxBA__8770.jpg

in theory, a raid shouldnt notice any difference if you plug the same drives back into the same ports before applying any power to the system.

plugging them in in different ports may cause the raid to go funny tho, depending on the specific setup.

Ive used lots of raid arrays and its fine. All the metadata is on the drvies, not the card or the ports.

In the old parallel SCSI days were the SCSI port ID was very important it did matter which slot disks went in. Now with SAS/SATA it doesn't matter, much nicer.

If your still using one of those I won't complain too much if you loose you raid array.  /s

That's kinda what I was thinking.  It's nice to see what other people think on this.  I feel much more safe to disassemble my system.

Thank You Everyone !!! ^_^

Doubly bad idea because it's probably hardware RAID.

However, if OP has the data backed up somewhere, or doesn't care about losing the data, then RAID 0 away for performance. :)
