Maybe it's time the Internet adopted a "sarcasm" tag to alert readers to the use of irony in online conversation, and, hopefully, avoid situations like that of Justin Carter, a Texas teenager who has been in jail since February over a Facebook comment that failed to make a woman in Canada LOL.

Earlier this year, Carter and a friend got into an Facebook argument with someone regarding "League of Legends," an online video game with notoriously die-hard fans.Justin's father, Jack, explained to ABC local affiliate KVUE that at the end of the conversation "omeone had said something to the effect of 'Oh you're insane, you're crazy, you're messed up in the head,’ to which [Justin] replied 'Oh yeah, I'm real messed up in the head, I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts,’ and the next two lines were lol and jk [all sic]."

In case you've never been online before today: Internet shorthand LOL stands for "laughing out loud"; JK means "just kidding."

A woman in Canada who came across the boy's post failed to see the humor, however, and alerted police after Internet research revealed Carter, who was 18 at the time of the incident, lived near an elementary school. Carter was taken into custody and charged with making a "terroristic" threat.

An Austin, Texas, police spokesperson told Parentdish the department takes any threat made against schools seriously, especially after recent events.

Carter's parents have since launched a Change.org petition seeking signatures to protest their son's situation on the grounds of freedom of speech.

In the meantime, Carter, now 19, faces up to eight years in prison. His trial is scheduled to begin July 1.

 

Summary:

A 18 year old League of Legends player argues with a mate on facebook (not necessarily a friend). During a game of LoL he is called a mental challenger, retarded etc. He then replies "Oh yeah, I'm real messed up in the head, I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts..."

The next lines are

"Lol"

"JK"

 

He posts this on FB. Later a woman form Canada sees that the teen lives a few blocks from a Elementary. She calls the Texas Police which, fortunatky look into this "serious crime." However from our and Justins point is not a crime, but a joke, and unfortunately the police carry out this complaint in a very bad manner. He is arrested for nearly a month and then is sized of his pc. In this period he was just sitting in jail...

I believe still in jail, still you should know even if he is free...

And yes he did have a hearing...

 

I believe the hearing was on July 1st, he was not question for a whole month.

The laws of terrorism (he was charged for terrorism) were asked to be adjusted...

I don't believe that's something to be jailed for but there is a fine line of something being not illegal and being a blatant dumbass and saying stupid shit.

He went far

America at it again. Cracking down on "criminals" before they even know that they are a criminal. Soon everyone will be thrown in jail just because we all have to ability to hurt one another.

Its been done, it is a spice of life that makes you stand up, enjoy, change life. What will it be without change...?

We purse the Gov, hoping it will change... without unfortunate things like these we will have nothing to stand up for to change... or maybe

it just won;t be a problem at all... or will it.

Am I always late. Still like I said it is just easier for new members to sign the petition and be aware and those older ones who did not sign yet to sign.

He did post it out. Still she seemed "nosey" but more importantly one of those "concerned moms" that never care of the "lol" and "jk" and just look at the "threatening" comment...

After stuff that happened like that in past where people posted something like this and really did shoot up a school or something i dont wonder why he got sent to prison. There are jokes and there are one "f*cked up" ones. Also you cannot find people that will understand "jk" or "lol" sentence.

The woman should be arrested for wasting police resources, making an ass of herself and not minding her own business.

 

I remember back when Facebook was a serious medium of communication for college students..my how it dumbed down considerably since going public years ago.
