PSU dieing?

I was working on my friends computer tonight cause he been having issues of his computer shutting down 5-10 mins so after all the trouble shooting i put his old psu in and everything seems to be running good his new powersupply is a corsair CX750M its 4-5 months old bought at best buy im assuming i need to tell him to RMA it it smells like its burning and the shroud is pretty hot to the touch the fan is spinning and getting plenty of airflow but as i said its causing the computer to crash every 5-10 mins  should i tell him to RMA it?

What is the system that the rather average CX750M is powering?

Unplug it and RMA it. Now. NEVER attempt repair on a PSU and never let a bad smelling power supply continue to do ANYTHING.

That's about as power hungry as it gets for a mainstream system

 

RMA it and preferably see if you can get money back and buy an EVGA 650W GQ which costs $75 and is way better

Yea i was looking at a tier list right now and the CM is on the bottom at tier 4 i recommened a EVGA G2 which is what is in my system and ranked tier 1 but he didnt listen and was out shopping and bought it on impulse

Not real sure a older coolermaster i think 750 watt as well non modular and has like a snowflake on the non-fan side

You sure it's not a bios setting? Has he tried clearing the cmos?

Pretty sure worked fine for 4 months but no didnt check bios settings
