Server componet questions

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

What would I need an e5 for? I'm planning on running a few game servers and try to figure out how to make a personal cloud storage server. And @Whaler_99 how will the Xeon e5 2620 be for f@h

Then a 4770T will be sufficient. :)

1..Recommend a Dual socket motherboard for this CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117269

2.What kind of RAM should I use?

3.What kind of PSU should I have?

Feel free to recommend a whole build (under $1000ish no GPU, no peripherals or windows) if you want.

There are different types of servers.

Be more specific and provide whatever details you can.

Just a server for messing around with, nothing in particular. I want it to be quite powerful. I'm thinking of getting a Xeon e5 with a dual socket motherboard and upgrade later. I already have a graphics card. Anything else you need?

That's still too basic. What are you looking at doing?

That doesn't answer the question. Messing around with?

Rack mount? Drive/storage needs? Etc. Too many questions left unanswered.

Just a small thing like you would expect with a home server but a lot more powerful.

Wil probably have 2 4gb drives in RAID 1 until I save up for a raid card.

Any other info you need? (I'm new to server stuff)

Will this  CPU be compatible with this motherboard and do I need server ram?

I have a pretty similar question to ask, so I figured I would do it on an existing thread.
I have an old AMD 8350 from another build,

I need a server at home so if I were to under clock and under volt the CPU would it be a great day to day server chip for Windows Home Server?

Now I do understand the drawbacks of this CPU (i.e. power consumption) but I am hoping underclocking and volting would make a diffrence but would this CPU introduce any other drawbacks that server chips such as the Xeon doesn't have?

Many thanks,

(Noob)

You'll get much better answers if you just start your thread

A 8350 would work fine for that. A Haswell chip could use much less power with power save states though.

It would be great in terms of power and be overkill.

Xeons can run ecc ram which corrects any calculation mistakes that normal ram can make and is useful for file servers with essential data.

D you need ecc ram or will normal ddr3 do

There are quite a lot of differences however they are things you won't notice as you're not in an enterprise environment. These are things like specialist security measures etc.

Then to be honest, I would just buy an Intel 4770T and a basic H87 motherboard and then get a rack mount or standard tower case. Many people overestimate their server requirements. That'll provide you with 4 cores and 8 threads running stock at 2.5Ghz that can turbo to 3.7Ghz if need be. Unless you're in an environment where ECC RAM will make a difference, there is little point in getting an E5 class Xeon. The other alternative to the 4770T would be a 1230 V3 E3 Xeon.

The 4770T probably be better for folding then the E5 or E3 - the4770 chip has intel turbo boost v2, very nice clock and boost speed, and unlike the e3, doesn't need speciality board and ram - so cheaper. Honestly, unless running dual CPU and NEEDING ECC RAM, lot of times Xeon are just a waste...

Why a 4770T over 4770

Lower tdp most likely.
