Mark on new boxed i7 6700k

Hello,

I just received my new processor, i7 6700k, and there's an obvious mark. I've opened the box and confirmed that this on the processor lid and not just the packaging.

Has anyone else has this with their processor? If I attempt to use it am I likely to have any problems?

Thanks in advance

It's probably fine, that's just the heat spreader, a chunk of metal that sits on the die itself.  If you're really worried about it and it won't come off with isopropyl alcohol, contact support.

You should probably not put that in your system, because the chip may break and cause further problems. If you bought it from a store, I would drive back there and tell them to give you a new one, and if you bought it online I would call them and arrange an RMA to receive a new one. Although I am slightly curious, what is that mark? Does it seem like a dent, or is it simply a piece of dirt?

I will most likely not respond to you in a thread unless you quote me.

I never saw anything like this, have you

tried cleaning it?

is it a dent?

is it raised?
do you feel it on there?

was it preowned?

Thanks for the responses.

Having opened the plastic container, there is residue on both the heat spreader and the plastic container. Hopefully this means its something that I can clean off? Currently don't have any isopropyl to hand and its almost midnight here so would be a job for tomorrow.

I've seen some marks on some of these processors. If you ask me, an employee marked it to indicate better performing CPU so they can buy it later themselves. Just a theory though, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be true.

Blue screens eh? Did you try setting it to Wumbo?
