144 Hz Monitor?

saladcrack

So I have a EVGA 1070 SC and I was wondering if I get a 144hz monitor will there be a problem if I can't run a game at 144fps?  Is that how refresh rate works?  Sorry super noob here.

Also, can a 1070 run decently with a 1440p monitor?  All settings high to ultra on games like AC Syndicate, Arma 3 and GTA V?  And even future games like BF 1, No Man's Sky etc.

I can't decide which is better, higher hz or 1440p?

You need to pick one or the other, you can either run 144hz or you can run 1440p, not both.

you can get gsync 1440p monitors with refreshrates up to 165hz, but that will cost you around $750 us

what are you talking about

I'm talking about his graphics cards ability to run at those refresh rates/resolutions, it just wont do it.

$200 but if there is the perfect monitor I absolutely need to get I can go higher.

Do you want 1440p 60hz, or 1080p 144hz?

I'm leaning more toward 1440p because I've been playing at 1080p for the past 2 years.  Also, when games get too tough for a 1070 to play at 1440p can I downscale the resolution on the monitor to 1080p and have it still look normal? I've heard using a 4k tv at 1080p looks weird.

Unfortunately no, you cant get a pixel perfect match if you downscale to 1080.

I have a asus  vg248qe and I can tell you, its a good monitor.

I wasn't planning to downscale it immediately, just a couple years down the road when games get hard to run with a 1070 at 1440p.

That just isnt true, Unless the person is running games at ultra max settings. Which last time I checked no one does unless they are bechmarking something....

Will anything weird happen if I can't match the refresh rate of my monitor?  Like screen tearing or something?

it can but using adaptive refresh rate (part of DX12) can reduce that

Umm no . Basically the amount of 'Hertz' are monitor has the max amount of refresh rate that it can show you. So if youre getting 80 fps but your monitor is only 60 hertz. It will only show you 60 of the 80. But if you have 144hz monitor and your game is running at 100 fps itll be fine. Youre just not using your monitor to its full potential. So its your choice between how 'good' you want the game to look and how many frames you want.

Yes. I can run 1440p 144fps on plenty of games with a 780 Ti, and a 1070 is like 50% more powerful.

Tearing can happen no matter what your framerate and refresh rate are unless they are synchronized with something like V-Sync, or G-Sync/FreeSync. But to answer the question, no you don't "need" to be able to match the monitor's framerate to make use of it. If you get 100fps on a 144 Hz monitor, it will still look a lot smoother than a 60 Hz monitor. You may hear a lot of people saying if you can't get 144 fps all the time in every game at max settings, then a 144 Hz monitor is a waste, mostly it's just people with no actual experience, just trying to theorycraft and logic their way through the question and passing it off as if they know what they're talking about.

Id go for a 144hz at 1440p if you can afford it but if you cannot. It depends on what games you play and what you want to get from your games.
