Hello, looking to see if I will be able to re-use my CPU cooler on my new AM5 build. Obviously since the Amazon page was made before AM5 came out it would not be on it, I'm not sure if it would be compatible or not?

Amazon.com: Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition CPU Air Cooler, SF120R RGB Fan, 4 CD 2.0 Heatpipes, Anodized Gun-Metal Black, Brushed Nickel Fins, RGB Lighting for AMD Ryzen/Intel LGA1151 : Electronics

AFAIK AM4 coolers are AM5 compatible. IIRC even AM2 stuff can work on AM5.

Almost anything AM4 compatible is AM5 compatible. AMD made the IHS thicker and the hole pattern the same with AM5 to maintain AM4 cooler compatibility.

Where things get weird is prior to AM4, but from my experience, FM2+ and AM3 have the same latch design, so any latch type cooler for AMD will probably still work if it uses the latch type mount. Otherwise, the hole pattern is different between all of the sockets prior to AM4.

Example, I have an AM4 cooler mounted on an FM2+ motherboard that uses the latch type mount.

Are you using the included backplate for that cooler? If the cooler requires a backplate on AM4, it will not work with AM5. If it can work with the stock AM4 backplate then it's completely compatible with AM5.

Based on what I'm seeing it appears that the CM backplate above uses studs and AM4/5 stock backplates use threaded posts.

Yeah, dunno, unless CM sells an AM5 bracket kit its not going to work as the stock backplate is not removable on AM5 (at least not without pulling off the fasteners for the ILM.

Can someone explain to me why any coolers at all removed the stock AM4 backplate to use their own? Clearly its sufficient.

I'd assume so they could use the same studs as with the Intel setups. AMD's threading is very weird (M3.5 IIRC, it's basically the only thing that uses that screw size), and if they're gonna have to include a backplate for Intel anyway, might as well make it work with AMD and save the 10c on the different screws and not have to make odd screw sizing on Intel.

That makes a lot of sense then, thank you!

Currently using it on Intel and was wanting to be able to reuse it for a new build. I did get a hold of CM support and they said it wouldn't work 😕

It will with the AM5 kit I linked above.
