Well, the good news is that they are both just 12 volt power supplies. So unless you somehow messed the connector itself up (it will be obvious and would have required lots of force), then just put everything in the right place, and go on about your business.

Should be fine as long as you didn't screw up the connectors, put everything in the correct place and you should be fine.

The gpu adapter should not fit into the cpu power slot. Did you force it in?

Oh smoke. Something burned up then. Smoke doesn't just come from nothing. Are there any physical signs of damage that would make it obvious which component is ruined?

Plug only the CPU Power Connector and 24-PIN Power Connector and see if the board posts first before trying with the GPU. If your board does not have onboard video, plug the GPU as well, but making sure the PCI-e power goes to the GPU and CPU power goes to the CPU connector.  If this is your first build, do not rush, make sure you keep checking everything is plugged in correctly.

So you built it, tried turning it on and saw smoke, right?

1-List the components used.

2-Look for burnt marks, if possible provide pictures showing the state of the components.

if it still works it might be fine for a while but you might have busted a few things (caps, diode or other). The pins are reverse on those connectors (12v where the ground is on each other, see image below).

Also it shouldn't be possible, those connectors are "keyed" to make sure it would not happen.

So you managed to cram the CPU power from the PSU into your GPU and vice versa and therefore caused smoke to come up when you powered the machine on?

I am honestly impressed, you really had to have really forced it in hard.

What were the specs?

You cannot get this thing to post at all?
