I was wondering if RAID 0 was worth the risk for the performance. I was planning on buying two Intel 535 series 120gb ssd's and running them in RAID 0 for my boot drive. Is it worth it? Or should I just stick with one ssd?

For most purposes you probably wouldnt notice the speed

that said i find 120gb too small so for ease of use combining them into a single 240gb drive might make life easier and it WILL be faster

the increased risk is only small, the main issue is, if one drive fails, both fail - but you should be keeping a backup of your data anyway

I'd say Raid 0 is worth it if you plan on using the SSD storage for games and your OS, since it would decrease loading times even more than if you would use a single SSD. If you plan on using it for storing any files that are irreplaceable, like photos, films and documents, you're better off with a single SSD, since the speed at which you load the files are so fast anyway. Games and your OS can be reinstalled if you just have a stable internet connection or an installation disk for it.

TL;DR

Go with Raid 0 if you plan on using the space for Games and OS, otherwise don't.

Also, you could just backup photos and other files with cloud storage solutions.

And as mentioned by ShadowCaptain, if one drive fails in Raid 0, it will corrupt the data on both. But if a single SSD crashes, you might be able to recover some of the data.

so just a boot drive? if so, one SSD is just enough... but i'd rather get a higher capacity. if its games and all that stuff then I would personally think Raid 0 is worth it.

Hi all not sure if this is the correct place but it is kinda relevant (if this is the wrong place or its already been posted/asked then sorry in advance) but I have already done something similar in my Pc, I will in the end be running this in raid 10 but maybe you could help me out in the mean time.

I already had a Kingston HyperX 3K SSd 120gb in my system and I wanted to create the raid0 using my on board Sata (AMD not Intel) I will be getting Cards in the end for the Raid 10 (If the issue is related to it not having the card then that's fine) I brought a drive with the closest speed match as I could as they don't make the drives any more (I know that the Raid will take the slowest drives speed and will apply that to the array).

Skipping the boring parts on cloning the drive from a single to a Raid Array which I did, my boot times have dropped from 10 secs to 20+ secs however the load times for everything else are much quicker now when in Windows 10. I have done some standard searching and come across a few things that I am in need of clarifying about alignments and if that could be the problem with the slower than usual boot times. Has cloning the drive from a single to a raid array somehow moved the raid 0 alignment and if so now that I have my Raid 0 Backed up if I recreated the raid array again and put the Raid 0 image back on would it keep the alignment or would it shift the alignment from the Image.

you need any more info I would be happy to give it also if like I said you would think its to do with it being on the motherboards sata connectors and that being on a card would solve this then I am happy to put up with it till I get a card

Thanks in advance

Yea I never recommend ssds smaller than 240 GB the return on investment is abhorrent in both size and performance.
