Obsolescence is difficult to predict, but most GPU's last for two to three generations on High settings before either needing to turn them down or getting a new one for better settings. Maxwell is still going strong and Pascal beating Maxwell is a given since tech should get better not worse over time.

Titans are always going to be those cards "cuz I could" rather than "cuz I needed".

If you're looking to upgrade get the best you can afford that meets the MINIMUM frame rates of your resolution. It's better to buy a $300 GPU that will last two generations than buying the 200 GPU and lasting one.

You would have to define "obsolete". At the beginning of this year I was still using a GTX 260. It ran all the games I was wanting to play just fine. (smooth framerates, medium graphics). I would say that since it was still working, and doing what I needed it to do, then it wasn't obsolete. However when i got my 980ti and 6700k system, it was very clearly like I just jumped from the stone age into 21st century.

Realistically though, whatever you buy should be relevant for 3-5 years (depending on exactly how strong of a card you buy, and what performance you expect out of your system)

well cant a GTX 1070 beat it performance wise

Doesn't mean it's obsolete. Sure, a 1070 is a better deal, but you don't need to sell a Titan X  yet, hell, even a normal Titan can play on high settings... New model =/= Old model is obsolete

Well, I had an HD 7950, and could play games on high / very high settings on 45-50FPS, I upgraded in July '15.

Obsolete "no longer produced or used; out of date."

The Maxwell series is not produced, but it is used more than any other architecture including Intel for gaming on steam and does so with excellent price to performance. So expect the same from Pascal. Years of service.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

You are kind of talking about two different things. Maxwell is considered obsolete if your buying a new card. But it is not obsolete in terms of game performance. I am using a 780 and i get about 50-60 fps on high settings in 1440p

So ya reckon it would take like at least 4 years or so for the GTX 10- to just not run games on 4k settings desirably

well a 1060 is pretty much already obsolete if that is your criteria. if you're talking 1080, then that would depend on the game and the FPS you want to run it at. But yes, 4 years is a good ballpark

Longer than that. As PC gamers we WANT the highest settings possible but as PC gamers, we can dial down settings to achieve desired results.

Depends on the games and the optimization. The issues we're seeing are not the hardwares fault, but lazy publishers not giving developers the resources to optimize the games for PC. If the trend changes we might see older hardware performing better in the future, no one knows.
