Hey everyone,

I am planning out my first storage server build for a small business. I want to rack mount because I am expecting to install up to 4 servers in the rack in the next few months. I have been planning out this first build and wanted to see what I am overlooking or not correctly selecting. I have built computers in the past, but not a server.

I am thinking about doing Raid 10, that way my board supports it without a Raid Controller needed. The GPU is just to provide display. SSD is for bootdrive.

Will I be alright using a regular PC PSU? It is platinum, but I am not sure if its OK or not. Is this processor powerful enough aswell?

Just looking for some input to see what needs changing and what not, just a rough outline as of right now. Mostly looking to be able to access this server from anywhere, as many users will be all over the United States.

P.S (if another server was created down the line to host a website, what would be some good security measures to prevent hackers? The site will be built from scratch)

Thanks,

Matt

Possibly may be in wrong forum, I apologize :(

The PSU should be okay, but I'd look into some redundant power supplies for insurance as the UPS isn't insurance for the PSU dying.

Software RAID 10 should be okay but hardware RAID 10 has its advantages, but I'm not the guy to ask for RAID.

I couldn't find find any mention on ECC, but I do see that it accepts Registered (make sure it supports the ECC).

Id higly suggest you get a used server on ebay, much cheaper and has many features that you can't have in a custom(impi, psu montering, hostswap fans, Easy to get parts for, screwless repair).

Id probably get a dell r510, dell c2100 or a hp dl180 g6. You can find these on ebay for under 300 and then install linux on a usb drive and fill with drives.

If your just using it for storage(probably a good idea, id suggest you go with a xeon d or a xeon e3 as the lga 2011 chips are often slow as many network file transfers are single threded.

Also why windows server? Do you need AD?

NEVER run motherboard raid on a server. Get a raid card(you can get a dell h700 for about 70 on ebay or a new lsi 9260 8i. If you don't want a raid card, use storage spaces, it much better than mobo raid(data scurbbing).

Won't make any difference, just get 2 hdds in raid 1if you care about uptime.

Mobo has a built in gpu just for this.

Lots of firewall? Use something like cloudfare for ddos protection.

Would I need to change server chassis? I have seen chassis that have the two server grade slots for PSU's, but I am not sure what PSU's are quality in the server world. Any recommendations? I misread, I do not see anywhere that that board mentions it supports ECC.

I found this board instead:

https://www.amazon.com/Supermicro-DDR4-2011-Motherboards-X10SRI-F-O/dp/B00JPJMK0K/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1469391274&sr=1-2&keywords=lga+2011+ecc

And I think I will get a raid card then, I see most people install the SAS raid cards and use the SAS to 4 Sata cables. The LSI Card that was mentioned seems like a good buy, tricky setup I hear though.

If you're only using it for file storage, then the specs seems super overkill imo.

Yeah, It needs to be a powerful solution for a emerging business. So it needs to have plenty of power and be upgradable, as it will be storing important files such as proposals and other documents.

On a scale of 1-10,  how much overkill? It also may eventually run some other stuff on it as well

I would like to build a new one, for the hobby factor and what not. The extra money to build is not a huge issue. But if I would like some of those features and still build, are there accessories I can install in the rack to acquire such features? (i.e the monitoring and what not)

Also is this a decent chassis or are there better HotSwap chassis out there?

How much slower are the LGA 2011 v3 chips? I like the performance I have seen online, and would like to buy a chip that I can remove and replace if needed. What other xeon chips would you recommend?

And what if I went dual Xeon LGA 2011?

Understood loud and clear. I like the LSI card you mentioned. Just the Raid card process looked messy, but I will have to buckle down and go do that.

Ok, was mostly getting this just to have it xD

Ok do most server boards have a small build in GPU for display? I am assuming VGA mostly

And does this one? Might use this one because it has ECC for sure.

Most of the redundant power supplies are on Newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Description=redundant power supply&Submit=ENE

Athena Power has been pretty good for me but make to look at reviews before purchasing.

The other option is to look into using two PSU's and having them run through a shared output, but that's out of my realm/scope.

I would favor upgrade capability, so go with 6TB Red Pro's since they're designed for larger arrays. whichever way you go do the research as much as possible.

Good point with the 6TB WD Reds, I will look into those

Yes, as long as your chassis supports ATX or EPS12V PSU's it should fit. And when one dies you pull it out and replace with a single EPS (usually of the same brand for sizing purposes.

Make sure you look into the Red Pro, as well. The 5 year warranty and better shock resistance may come in handy during hot-swaps.

The Rosewill chassis is nice and I added a quad hotswap to the 5.25" bays.

The Xeon is a good CPU but it doesn't have an iGPU so I would find whatever is lying around even if it's a Matrox G200.

Good going with 32GB on two sticks of ECC RAM.

Motherboard will fit the chassis and is capable of using ECC.

The SSD isn't necessary and I know Windows can be placed on a USB key so check if Windows Server can be placed on a USB mini-stick.

I still think 3 x 6TB would be a better value for expansion or even 4 x 5TB for more capacity but Red Pros fit if you use all 12 bays.

PSU is a good choice as its redundant and capable of supporting should one die.

It's a cabinet... With a door... Moving on.

I would look into a server grade UPS because if your power goes down you will only have one minute to shut everything down and that'll suck.

OS is up to you.

If you need USB 3.0, get a PCIe card.

You need a SAS card in order to use the adapter.

And the cooler is sufficient but you can get something like a low profile Noctua cooler that has more surface area so that your case airflow can cool the CPU passively or with the Noctua fan.

Otherwise it's looking good.

I believe I have corrected all things you have suggested. No can do on the Windows install on the USB. Correct WD Reds?

Everything looks good. You could even go cheaper on the GPU since you'll only use it to install the OS. Borrowing one should suffice.

Yeah, It needs to be a powerful solution for a emerging business. So it needs to have plenty of power and be upgradable, as it will be storing important files such as proposals and other documents.

On a scale of 1-10,  how much overkill? It also may eventually run some other stuff on it as well

Im not sure on a scale of 1-10, but i was mostly talking about the CPU.

I don't see a NIC on the list anywhere, so im not sure if you will be transfering things at any higher speeds than 1gbit?

Even if you are going for something like 10gbit a quadcore should be enough.

Im not sure how important power usage is either, going for something less powerful would probably let you save some money in the long run.

I will see about the nic, might look into a 10GB nic, did not think about it

Alright cool stuff man, Thanks for all the help!

Anytime. Once you're done installing, you can remove the GPU thanks to remote management software.

I would like to build a new one, for the hobby factor and what not. The extra money to build is not a huge issue. But if I would like some of those features and still build, are there accessories I can install in the rack to acquire such features? (i.e the monitoring and what not)

You could get a dell r730 or r730xd. There is normally no way to get that if you diy.

Normally diy servers are worse ad the servers from dell and hp have custom motherboards that let you do things that you can't do in atx(like quad or 8 socket)

How much slower are the LGA 2011 v3 chips? I like the performance I have seen online, and would like to buy a chip that I can remove and replace if needed. What other xeon chips would you recommend?

And what if I went dual Xeon LGA 2011?

You want single theaded for file server normally(what protocal are you using?)

Id use a xeon e3 or a xeon d. LGA 2011 is overkill for a file server, and unless you buy the high clocked chips(there normally 1000+) its much more expensive.

Ok do most server boards have a small build in GPU for display? I am assuming VGA mostly

And does this one? Might use this one because it has ECC for sure.

Yea, almost every server board has a gpu built in.

You don't need the gpu at all, it has a vga port built in.

I didn't think VGA would work if there was no iGPU.

Whats with the windows on usb? It doesn't like that

Why are you running windows. Its worse for storage than linux, costs 500 dollars, and is less secure.

Why get a gpu, your motherboard has one.

Id get a lsi 9211i 16i and use freeNAS.

You need to this this through a bit more. If you want a website, hosting of something like AWS is a much better solution.
