Whats with the windows on usb? It doesn't like that

Why are you running windows. Its worse for storage than linux, costs 500 dollars, and is less secure.

Why get a gpu, your motherboard has one.

Id get a lsi 9211i 16i and use freeNAS.

You need to this this through a bit more. If you want a website, hosting of something like AWS is a much better solution.

I looked into the Windows on a USB and found the same thing. I am running windows because there will be close to 20 users accessing this server, I like the windows server 2012 r2 environment. All the other machines will be windows, so I was going to use the same OS and I am comfortable with it. I like the remote access as well

I might get a GPU just to have it,and it will have a dedicated monitor for the server until I install the other 3 servers. Then i will go VGA with a KVM setup.

I am going to get the raid card from LSI probably.

And I need to host the website in house, client specifically requested to not use any outside hosting.

But I was just wondering about a website server, that is still in the air. Priority is a vault storage server like this one I have been planning

Buy a laptop and use IMPI/drac

No reason for kvm, use IMPI/drac

You seem to be treating a job as a hobby. Go buy some dell servers. There better than anything you can build, about the same price, better support(onsite 3yr). Go buy a few r730's

It is a hobby/job. Server building is not something I usually do, but he wants to build from scratch(he is looking for a project). I will look into the IMPI/drac setup. And if I used FreeNas how would a get remote access, and access to the files outside of the local network. I saw owncloud, but I didn't like it as much as the windows interface.

If you want acces, you can VPN in, Port forward the https port, or give yourself ssh access.

Ok, could I assign users specific read/write privileges? Based on logins?

If this is the golden solution to use FreeNas, why don't more people use it? Or am I just overlooking its potential?

Thanks

Users can be assigned to groups with individuals and groups.

I would have recommended FreeNAS, but support for FreeNAS is essentially a forum whereas Microsoft can help you out when there's trouble.

If you have ad you can sync it with that.

What are most people using

For storage if you got a lot of money you buy a san, thats can easily go into the millions.(these often run zfs, the same subsystem that freenas uses)

If you have some money you get a NAS from someone like synology

I guess I just thought Windows Server was the mainsteam, But I guess FreeNas is quite popular.

Yeah I don't know about a SAN. I have seen them and they are probably a slight bit overkill for the stage the company is at now. xDxD

Thanks for the Input

What are you storing?

Block, Object, or file

What protocol

What filesystem

I wouldn't use a SAN since you're looking for multiple machines and a server cabinet is better suited for it.

Files, mostly small sized files. Will be media such as photos and small videos. But a lot of spreadsheets, docs and other things.. Just a lot of people will be adding/editing these files.

Was thinking about just going simple and using NTFS or exFat

Not sure about the protocol

More planing

For what you seem to be doing, buy a synology nas. They just work and build just for this. Your throwing away money with this build.

Id look at a synology https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/RS18016xs+

Alright, I will take a look. You are correct more planning. For a DIY Server though what Protocol and Filesystem would you reccomend?
and what OS does the synology run? Or do I install myself?

Depends on what your doing. What os are the clients using.

For windows desktops, just go with CIFS/SMB

Synology has a linux version on it. You don't mess with the os at all. Its basically plug and play.

Ok, cool. Yeah windows PCs. And ok cool, and most of the synology servers I saw came diskless, so I could still pick up some of those WD Red Pros and call it good?
