Should be just a standard cat5 male to male, the same as what's between the modem and the wifi boxes.

I am a paid professional, but only when I am at work...and getting paid.

It would be male/male, because the port on a pc is female, and the port on a router is also female.

Ok. thx.

cat5/6/7 will do fine, what you want is a patch cable.

Yeah they're pretty cheap now I just give them away to customers sometimes since I have a box of them.

Prices will vary based on geographic region. Here in North America, they are pretty cheap, unless you are buying from a "big box" retailer, like Best Buy, Staples, Wal-Mart, etc. They all have massive margins and high prices on things like cables.

Places like Amazon, Monoprice, and computer stores like NewEgg, NCIX, CanadaComputers, MicroCenter, etc, all have very low prices.

So, you need to find a local equivalent, or an online retailer that ships to your location.

Hint! Check the cable, it should have 8 colored wires. That means it can handle Gigabit speeds.

If it only has 4 wires in the male rj45 connector it's a 100 Megabit cable.

That's not strictly correct. Category 5 cables (Intended for 10/100 Mbps connections) have 8 wires (4 pairs), yet there is no guarantee that they can do Gigabit.

a 4-wire (2 pair) wire is likely a Category 3 Phone Cable, and they look different, and would normally be terminated using an RJ11 connector. If someone is wiring a Cat 3 cable with RJ45, then that cable is either ridiculously old, or they are just doing it wrong.
