I am planning to buy a second hand SSD from my friend who is an average consumer and told me that he had it for just over 6 months

and has not written to it a lot.So this means that it is not as taxed as a SSD would get from a prosumer !

it is a corsair neutron gtx 120gb SSD and I just wanted to know if it would be a good deal as he is selling to me for half the original price and it seems to be a lucrative deal.

What do you think ? Should I buy it ? Would it be ok?

People's definitions of "a lot" vary drastically. I can see him (acting like most regular consumers would) continually installing and uninstalling something in an attempt to get it to work properly. The idea of buying a piece of used hardware that would be as important as a hard drive makes me cringe.

$65 is pretty good but if I bought it I wouldn't use it as my boot drive.

why not a boot drive?

no... you have no idea what the guy did to that ssd

Because this^^^

Especially since he's a normal user, you don't know what he's done to it, he could have defragged it every other day did what I mentioned in my first post or generally treated it poorly.

This is imo bad advice, he isn't buying that SSD from the same person so there are is no possible way to compare the condition of the two. Just because you bought one used from one person and it's fine doesn't mean that the one he might buy from someone else will be fine too.

@kizoku_95 I stand by what I said before, go ahead and get it because a 120GB SSD for $65 is nice but I wouldn't use it for my OS.

Ask him what the health status is, many programs report this, CrystalDiskInfo for example, if it's below say 80%, don't buy it, the chances are it will be 100 or 99%

http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

<=90% - buy it

> 90% - don't buy it

just to be absolutly safe..

Yeah true, if it has really only been used for just over 6 months then the chances are it will be 100% or very close to 100% anyway.

even if he would write like 50Gigs a day, it should still be at 100%, hence mine is aswell and its like 2 years old now, and im using it normally

Get it and go ahead and use it as a boot drive.

Check the health though.

SSD's are much more reliable than hard drives which are ticking time bombs...
