Alright, so I'm having some issues with CPU bottlenecking with Overwatch.

My build is:

ASUS Z87-a

I5-4670k 3.4GHz 6MB

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760 (Has now been swapped out for an MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Aero OC)

16GB (8x2) of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz

Seagate Bararacuda 2TB Hard Drive

Corsair Firce Series GS 128GB SSD (OS installed here)

Corsair RM650 650W PSU

Corsair H60 Hydro Series CPU Cooler

Before the upgrade, I was sitting at a pretty stable 120+ fps with most settings turned off/low. Only had Models, Effects, Textures and AA on medium/high. After the upgrade I occasionally sit at a solid 140 fps but most of the time it sist at 110 and sometimes drops below 70.

GPU Usage is at 60% for the most part and CPU Usage is at 100%. The thing that really puzzles me is the fact that my framerate went down after the upgrade, even on lower settings.

Review the CPU usage to see what exactly is hogging it all. I've had issues with WiFi card drivers that under gaming loads would freeze up my CPU. Other culprits can include certain antivirus software or any of the ----wares (ie. bloatware, adware, malware).

I'd recommend scanning your PC with Malwarebytes and your antivirus (hopefully something decent such as Avast not Norton) and solving any issue(s) they may detect.

Cpu shouldn't be bottlenecking that card that bad at all.

Unsure what power supply to pick?

Check out my HTPC build.

It's called a CPU bottleneck. Read here

I almost definitely wouldn't expect a CPU such as yours to bottleneck in that game, something else must be up there.

The 1080 is bottlenecked by everything except i7s so far

It shouldn't be that bad. I never said it wasn't a bottleneck.

It is. i5s bottleneck the 1070 by 20% and the 1080 by 40%.

I would just like to know what is going on when you think: huh let me pair this fairly inexpensive CPU and this really expensive GPU.

You NEED a i7 for a GTX 1080

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.

I get that to get full use of a card like that requires a better CPU, but that still doesn't explain why the performance went down.

as Don said with a i5 you remove around 40% of the performance of a 1080 and well there is maybe a driver problem and did you change the res?

All my drivers are updated and I run it at 1920 x 1080 resolution both before and after the upgrade.

Now, if I have to get a new CPU what would I go for? The highest I can get with my LGA1150 Socket motherboard is the i7-4790k, anything above that requires a new motherboard which might also require DDR4 Ram, as my current board uses DDR3.

a i7 4790k should be fine. hhmm what MHz is the card running at?

huh, maybe try a reinstall of the driver.

Have you noticed if you think your CPU is bottlenecking other games besides Overwatch.

Sorry for the delayed reply, because that's something else that's weird too.

Fallout 4 was basically untouched by the upgrade.

Overwatch lost frames and became unstable.

Skyrim (With 45 mods, some of them being texture mods) got over double the frames and is now sitting at a rock solid 120

What exactly did you upgrade from? How hot is your CPU running? What exactly are your BIOS settings concerning your CPU and multiplier settings? Did you change any software? Which GPU drivers do you use? How hot is your GPU running? (Is it only happening in Overwatch?)

One of the asked question will provide an answer which is going to be the solution to your problem. But I really think your chip might be running hot.

A Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760.

Around 45 °C. I have never seen it go above 55 °C.

I am not sure, it is probably whatever default is.

1 hour ago, black0utm1rage said:

Only updated my NVidia drivers.

NVidia Geforce Experience.

1 hour ago, black0utm1rage said:

Around 75 °C. (Only Overwatch had decreased performance. Fallout 4 and Warframe stayed the same. Skyrim's perfomance went from unstable 50fps to solid 130fps.)

Is overwatch still playable and over 60 fps? Yes then leave it.

It stays above 60, yes. But I've gotten so used to 120 that it feels like 30. And again, my performance was better with the 760 at higher graphics, so there has top be something weird here.

Nothing weird, your cpu is the weakest link. @don_svetlio already mentioned it.
