Should I get a gt 610?

hammad1029

So basically I have a HP Compaq dc7900 desktop and I want to add a GPU to it, it has an Intel core 2 duo(e8400) running at 3.00ghz, 3gigs of ddr2 ram(will upgrade it to 4) and no discrete GPU currently and I would like to add a GPU(the gt610) to it, my question is that will it bottleneck? Ill only play games like cs go and cod 4 and those too at 720p, Ill play at the lowest setting if needed, should I go for the 40$ GPU?

Your probably better off getting something like a R7 250x or a 750Ti so you have a decent graphics card if you ever buy a new computer.

Ryzen 5 1600 - GTX 980 Ti - Broke.

It'll be hard to game an a graphics card less powerful than a GT 740 or R7 250, those go for about $60

I'm on a tight budget currently(50$) and a new PC isn't gonna happen anytime soon and when it will I'll get a better GPU, and even if I do get it it will bottleneck like crazy but I think my current PC will be able to handle the gt610 but that is the question

That's not the point, what I'm asking is that will it bottleneck, also if I but the ones u mentioned, will they bottleneck?

GT 610 is honestly not much better than an Intel HD iGPU. GT 740/250X minimum if you want to do anything beyond solitaire

The difference between GT 610 and GT 740 is pretty massive, so yes they will run your games at low fps

The 740 can run those 2 games smoothly in 720p

If you can wait a bit more (a few weeks), wait and see how much an AMD RX 460 will cost.  It should be less than $100 in US, a bit more in other parts of the world but have excellent performance for games like the ones you mention.

Probably way overkill for 720p cod4 / csgo

My laptop could play CoD 4 smoothly at 720p at low and it had the literal equivalent of that GPU in performance.

That being said, OP, try getting a used GPU of sorts like a 7770.

I have a budget of 50$. what can I get within that?

I guess that depends where you are physically located. Can't really tell from your name.

New video cards are not worth buying if they're $50 or less, the performance is not much higher than what you get from video cards integrated in processors.

You get much better deals if you get used video cards.

from some hands on experience, GT610 is a potato.

i'd say at least a GT640, preferably a GT740 or GTX750(Ti)

bottleneck is not the question you need to ask, you have to ask what is the sensible thing to buy.

Again, everyone, OK, I understand, spend more money and get a better  GPU, but that's not the thing, a CPU like mine would really stop the card from running to its full potential, so keeping that in mind what do u recommend

the thing is, a GT610 is a terrible, terrible card that will neck out a c2d in minecraft. yes, it is a gpu that cannot handle minecraft.

also, HP has 3 systems in the dc7900 lineup, which one of the 3 do you have?

GT740. anything below is a waste of money, i'm gonna stay away from recommending the 750Ti because it's a more power hungry card, and while the psu should be capable, i woudnt risk it.

Well the gt 610 will play those games you asked. I know where you are coming from and the integrated gpu of socket 775 is absolutely horrendous. Even my old 9400gt (which had died) was better than the igpu (note the 9400gt is worse than the 610). With the igpu I could literally play almost no games. A gt 610 is better than my old 9400gt but still nothing to write home about. But for games like cs go and cod 4 at 720p it'll do fine.
