Media Key Compatability

If I were to get a keyboard with media keys (K70 for example), what programs are the media keys compatible with? Do they work with Spotify or YouTube? If they are, does the window have to be focused for them to work, meaning could I have Spotify open in the background and use the keys to control music while in a different program? And are the keys treated like normal keys that you could bind in programs and games?

You can open Youtube or Spotify with a macro key but you can't use them to control music/videos.

I'm pretty sure that you can use the keys in games/programs as normal keys if they aren't already programmed.
